Reddy Bikes are Back and Available to Ride for the Season!

Reddy Bikes are Back and Available to Ride for the Season!

All employees who work on the Medical Campus have access to a free annual Reddy Bikeshare membership (normally a $55 value!). There are two stations on Campus, one at Ellicott and Virginia, and the other located on Main St. near the Allen/Medical Campus train station. The entire BNMC is a free parking zone, so feel free to lock the bike to any secure public infrastructure.
To sign up and ride:
  1. Visit Reddybikeshare.com or download the Social Bicycles wp-content to register.
  2. Choose the Annual Pass, which will allow you access to all 200 bikes 24/7, April – November.
  3. Enter the promo code GOBNMC2019 at checkout. Make sure to hit “wp-contently” if you’re using the wp-content. Your membership fee will be waived, just pay 1 cent per minute to ride. Parking fees and fines may occur.
  4. Use the wp-content to locate bikes, or simply walk up to one and enter your account number and PIN. Unlock the bike, place the U-lock in the holster and ride! You can lock the bike to any other Reddy station or public bike rack in the city of Buffalo at the end of your trip.
Pro Tips:
  • The seat adjusts to your height, and there are three gears on your right handle and a bell on your left, use them!
  • Press the “HOLD” button on the bike’s keypad before locking the bike in order to keep your bike reserved while you make stops along your trip.
  • Find Bounty Bikes to accrue credit. When you find a Reddy bike outside a station or free parking zone, bring it back to a station for us and receive $1.00 in riding credit.
Visit reddybikeshare.com or e-mail info@reddybikeshare.com for more information.

BNMC Team Members Offer Perspectives on SXSW Festival

BNMC Team Members Offer Perspectives on SXSW Festival

Two BNMC team members, Kyria Stephens, community program manager, and Sean Heidinger, business development manager, along with several of our local partners, attended the 2019 SXSW Festival in Austin, TX earlier this month. Kyria and Sean offer their perspectives on the event and share key takeaways that will enhance our diversity and inclusion efforts on the Medical Campus.

From the Desk of Kyria

1. The Future is Here

One of the coolest things about science fiction is that is takes you to an imaginary world full of possibilities and strange gadgets! At SXSW, it was like we walked into the “New New”. Everything was from the future! We experienced VR on another level, and there was even a man who was breastfeeding his newborn via an artificial breast. The future of technology, film making, music and social engagement were all crammed in an area where there were just as many people riding electric scooters as there were cars.

2. Change your Vantage Point

There were several workshops and sessions on what it is like to be a woman or minority in white male-dominated spaces. We often see the statistics on inequality and hear that things need to change, but these sessions put flesh to the stories. The stories pushed for inclusion and equality by encouraging the attendees to understand the perspectives of women and minorities in everyday situations. Once your vantage point is changed you will see the landscape in a different way.

3. Party Party Party

Everywhere you went there was celebration in the atmosphere! Live music in the bars, outdoor roller rinks on the corner, food trucks on the sidewalks and hi-fives on the streets. It didn’t matter what color, gender or city you’re from, you were officially apart of the SXSW celebration, and I was loving it.

4. Food from Around the Globe

Every good party needs to have great food, and there was no shortage of it! I think I ate food from every continent. You name it, and it was probably on the next block! Almost everything was in walking distance and rightfully so because we needed to burn the calories afterward.

5. Inspiration to Take Back Home

We experienced such a charged atmosphere that when it came time to leave, we were ready to experiment in Buffalo. We know that everything won’t work, but I believe that our creativity got a booster shot, and we will now wp-contentroach things in a fresher way.

From the Desk of Sean

1. Throughout SXSW Tradeshow: VR VR VR VR

If you asked me what type of company/technology absolutely dominated the SXSW Trade Show, I would tell you that the amount of new companies and developments in Virtual Reality is overwhelming. Mind you, I do not have a technology background, so all innovative tech is impressive to me, but I felt that what companies are doing with VR is truly groundbreaking. There were a couple companies that stood out to me. For instance, Paradiddle. With my background in the music industry and spending a lot of time on tour in my twenties, this is a technology I gravitated towards, especially as a percussionist. See Kyria below playing a virtual drum set. He couldn’t see anyone or hear anything outside of the virtual world he was in, but there was a definitely a dance party that developed around this booth when he jumped on the drum set! Note the peddles on his feet for kick drum and hi hat. Amazing.

2. Real Life Apps: Imagine Jumping Right Through The Screen of Your Phone

That’s right, dive right through the screen into your favorite wp-content and experience that world. At SXSW, leading technologies and wp-contentlications construct physical locations, almost like a movie set, to provide you with a physical wp-content experience. Two of my favorite wp-contents are Uber Eats and Calm. One, obviously used for food delivery to your home from your favorite eateries that otherwise would not be available and the second to provide a calming experience to get you to sleep right away. I highly suggest both of them. Uber Eats, all over SXSW, had pop up cafeterias serving the most popular deliveries on the wp-content. When Kyria and I arrived on 6th Street, all you had to do was show that you have the Uber Eats wp-content and then boom!, a plate full of Popeyes Chicken was delivered right to you on the street. Every aspect of the experience was meticulously branded for both Uber Eats and Popeyes, proving that technology and the long standing restaurant chain are working together to provide an innovative experience both from your couch and at SXSW.
In regards to the CALM wp-content, their booth was within the SXSW Trade Show, and they decided to host a booth that made you feel as if you were right in the middle of a tranquil wooden forest or jungle. They were playing actual recordings from the jungle and had seating that made you feel as if you were in a hut with natives. To seal the deal, they actually brought live sloths (the most comfortable and slow moving animal on the planet) right into the booth as the icing on the cake. While these animals caused quite a stir, the CALM wp-content still managed to maintain an environment worth tweeting about.

3. Vice’s Skateland – Truly Incredible. Community Engagement at Its Finest!

Vice News had NOTHING to do with SXSW, except for creating a fun and interactive experience for everyone to enjoy. When I left the festival, Vice News had provided me with the most memorable experience. Vice News is a program on HBO that goes live and provides real, deep, and factual news with no commitments. They built their brand at SXSW by hosting Vice’s Skateland. Simply put, come on in (hundreds of people at a time), enjoy free cotton candy and slushies, and then throw some skates on, and hit the rink for free. It was a very simple, but free-spirited and highly engaging aspect to the festival that almost felt like a home away from home while cruising around Austin. At first pass, I declined skating and let Kyria do his thing. Then when we came back, I got involved. It was at Vice’s Skateland that I had the biggest smile of the weekend on my slushee stained face. It was an experience like this that makes me reconsider the psychology behind providing a truly memorable event experience. As I press on with planning events, I will always keep this in mind.

4. Female Empowerment and Racial Inclusion (Awareness) – We Can Do Better

Another very wp-contentarent theme at SXSW this year was major brands and technology companies’ commitment to women and minority inclusion. What I found most impressive, using technology to address this issue, was one company’s use of VR to experience the life and daily dealings of somebody who doesn’t look like you, at all. Walk a mile in someone else shoes was an experience I will never forget. It’s easy to assume, but this technology actually put me in direct connection with what someone else deals with daily. I was not only impressed, but profoundly excited to see that technology is being used to amplify these issues and helping to get more people behind supporting change. Put on the VR goggles and join me.

5. Buffalo, NY: You Can’t Shake This City

One would think that by going all the way to Texasthat there would be little to no Buffalo connections. Think again. See below, a photo of Brett Mikoll (Co Founder of Oxford Pennant) and Pablo Pinto (Founder of Tara.ai), both companies active at SXSW with Buffalo connections. One of the beauties of festivals like this is that being in such an innovative city makes one think differently. While I see Brett quite often in Buffalo, it’s because of our surroundings that we were able to get our typical conversation to a whole new level. Maybe it’s because we were on scooters, maybe it’s because of the vibe at SXSW, but I am confident that SXSW is so popular and considered the biggest networking event in the world simply because of the effect it has on people to press forward, think differently, and use their talents and technologies for good and change. Thank you for a wonderful long weekend, SXSW.

Considering an electric car? Charge it on the Medical Campus!

Considering an electric car? Charge it on the Medical Campus!

Many people are interested in electric vehicles because of their performance, as well as their environmental and consumer benefits. But knowing how and where to charge an EV can be confusing.

The good news is, charging an EV at home and on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus is easy!

As someone who works on the Medical Campus, you are in luck – you can also charge at work! The BNMC team has installed EVCS in many of its parking garages and lots, including 12 dual charging stations at 854 Ellicott Street, ten ECVS at 134 High Street*, and four EVCS at 589 Ellicott*, plus two curbside stations across from the Innovation Center at 640 Ellicott Street*, with the ability to charge 40 vehicles at one time. View this map to see locations of our current charging stations.  * Scheduled to be upgraded in 2019.

We are committed to ensuring that our infrastructure supports sustainable transportation, everything from making it easy to charge electric vehicles, to installing hundreds of additional bike racks, to providing reduced-rate transit passes. We are building an innovation district known for accessible, environmentally-forward ways for everyone to get here.

All modern EVs sold in the U.S. use a standard charging port for Level I (120-volt) and Level II (240-volt) charging for EVs, the J1772 port. Most EV owners charge at home, either (a) using the plug that comes with the vehicle to plug into a normal 120 volt outlet to add around 5 miles of range per hour of charging, or (b) installing a 240-volt charger to add 10-25 miles of range per hour charging. There is also more public charging available than many people think. You can learn more about charging at home and on the go at drivegreen.nationalgridus.com/charging.

Considering getting an EV? Check out discounts from local dealers through the Drive Green with National Grid program at drivegreen.nationalgridus.com.

Did you know?  Upstate NY customers can reduce their costs with the voluntary time-of-use rate by charging their electric vehicle during the off-peak hours of 11pm to 7am. Most EVs can be easily programmed to charge during these hours using an onboard timer, mobile wp-content, outlet timer, or EV charging station.

This content is provided to the BNMC through our partnership with National Grid’s Drive Green program.

Drive Green with National Grid

Drive Green with National Grid

We are very excited to announce a new electric vehicle discount program, Drive Green with National Grid! We have partnered with National Grid on many projects over the years, including infrastructure upgrades, developing an energy master plan, an innovative community solar program, and installing the first electric vehicle charging stations on the Medical Campus back in 2011.

As we look to a cleaner, greener future, National Grid has partnered with the non-profit Green Energy Consumers Alliance to build up a network of local car dealerships who offer everyone who works on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus fixed purchase discounts and great lease deals on a monthly basis. Stay tuned each month as we highlight new information on the program and deals that you can take advantage of.

Drive Green

Right now, there are great deals on the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt and plug-in hybrids such as the Chevy Volt, Honda Clarity, and Mitsubishi Outlander, with more coming soon! The Drive Green with National Grid discounts are in addition to the New York State Drive Clean rebate (up to $2,000) and the federal tax credit (up to $7,500). The Drive Green with National Grid website has a wealth of information about the cars, incentives, charging, environmental impact, and more. Check it out here. Business First’s Annual “Start-Ups to Watch” List Includes Three Companies Located on the Medical Campus

There are more than 125+ companies located on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus today, and while we may be biased, we think they are all ones to watch! But, we understand that sometimes you need to pare the list down, and are thrilled to see three of the companies on this list are located in our innovation district. Congratulations to SomaDetect, Tactiva Therapeutics, and Femi Secrets. 3AM and RepHike – you know where to find us if you want to be a part of the magic on the Medical Campus!

We are also hwp-contenty to see so more female entrepreneurs on the list this year. Let’s keep growing those numbers!

GOBNMC 101: So Many Ways to Get to Work on the Medical Campus!

GOBNMC 101: So Many Ways to Get to Work on the Medical Campus!

For people who work on the Medical Campus, there are plenty of ways to commute to work that are healthy, have less impact on the environment, and save you money!

The BNMC team coordinates the planning, development, and management of a multi-modal transportation system that provides safe and efficient access to the Campus, strives toward world-class customer service, enhances transportation options for the overall community, and supports an urban, walkable environment.

What does that mean to you, someone who is just trying to get to work, you ask?

Essentially it means that we want to create a healthier community while ensuring easy access for patients, employees & visitors to destinations on the Medical Campus. To do that, we work with many partners to continue to grow and improve the many transportation and commuting options. Sign up for any of our transportation programs at GoBNMC.org to discover your options and savings!

Commuting Options & GoBNMC Perks:

  • Public Transit: The newly renovated Allen Street/Medical Campus Subway station is located right on Campus inside the new Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The NFTA has also extended bus routes from the Southtowns to the Medical Campus with pick-up and drop-off locations at Carlton and Ellicott streets. Ask your employer about the BNMC corporate subsidy of at least $20 for monthly metro passes and pre-tax savings for transit to make it even more economical.
  • Carpool: If driving with one or more colleagues, you can take advantage of preferred parking spaces and a carpooling pass that allows you to split the cost of parking with up to four people. Pre-tax payroll deductions may make this even cheaper.
  • Bike: We more than doubled the number of bike racks across the Medical Campus in 2018 and we have secure bike storage with 24/7 member-only access at the corner of Ellicott and Virginia and soon to be open in the new garage at 854 Ellicott. Once the weather breaks (for good!) the Reddy Bike team will get the bike share program back in action. Stay tuned for the free annual membership code (available to everyone who works on the Medical Campus).
  • Need a ride after getting to the Medical Campus without a car? Take advantage of the Zipcar Carshare program to use a vehicle for a flat rate (includes gas & insurance). Free membership and discounted rates are available for Medical Campus employees. We also offer Guaranteed Rides Home through Lyft if something unexpected comes up and you need to be there quickly!
  • Walk: Enjoy the scenery and the health benefits by getting to Campus on your own two feet!

Car-less since 2012, Pablo credits Buffalo as a great place for cyclists, and believes cities should stop thinking about streets in terms of vehicles, but rather people. A holistic thinker with a passion for giving back, he talks about his travels across the globe, spending time in New York City, Boston, Ecuador, South Korea, Silicon Valley, Albany, NY, and Buffalo, NY, and the major ways he’s seen technology transform cities and the future of work.

Sparking a Culture of Health on the BNMC

Sparking a Culture of Health on the BNMC

BNMC’s healthy communities team has been busy catalyzing wellness initiatives across Campus and our surrounding neighborhoods! From Spark micro-grants to workplace wellbeing and federal grants, we’re proud to be at the forefront of building a healthier city.

Our wp-contentroach includes:

Piloting new technologies:

We installed Byte in the lobby of the Innovation Center earlier in 2018 in partnership with Farmers & Artisans. They keep it stocked with fresh, wholesome, local food options available 24/7. We were able to purchse this through our Creating Healthy Schools and Communities grant from the NYS Department of Health.  We have purchased two other machines, are rebranding them as FRESHTAKES, and will be installing them at the Jacobs Institute in the Gates Vascular Institute and the UBMD offices at Conventus.

Growing fresh produce when possible:

Through this same grant, we were able to get several Grow Towers to allow local organizations to grow their own fresh produce. Our Grow Tower in the Innovation Center has produced a variety of greens – gourmet lettuces, dinosaur kale, bok choy, and herbs like basil and parsley. We had a building get-together and made soup for everyone, and on harvest days have salad parties. We provided a tower to Hospice Buffalo, where they have been growing fresh produce to use in their cafeteria and patient menus. We also provided a Grow Tower to Erie Community College Downtown Campus for their culinary program, which supports healthier ingredients on their menu for staff, students, and the general public.

Providing Spark funding:

Through the BNMC Spark microgrant program, we provided funding for 17 different local projects, several of which involved increasing access to fresh food for our local neighborhoods. The Moot Center, a longtime partner of the BNMC, was able to build a pergola to finish off its raised garden beds that our team helped them build in 2017, allowing seniors to garden in the shade, and  providing covered space for their weekly farmer’s market and events. We also supported Fresh Fix, a local CSA that has a buy one, give one wp-contentroach.

Promoting healthy eating options on and around Campus:

We debuted our Food Map this year and quickly ran out! This guide showcases places within a few minute walk from institutions on the BNMC and encourages employees to get out and get moving on their breaks. We are currently updating and reprinting, so please let us know if you see something missing.

Seeking grant funding to support projects:

We recently launched a three-year, $351K project with support from the United States Department of Agriculture’s Local Food Promotion Program to create a model for health care institutions to integrate technology and cultivate a culture of healthy food practices to increase local food procurement. We will be moving into the public phase of this effort in 2019, so stay tuned for more! This implementation grant was a follow-on to a $25,000 planning grant we received two years ago through the same program to increase healthy food in health care.

Collaborating to eliminate disparities in food access:

Under the lead of the Mobile Safety-Net Team, we are part of a collaborative coalition of local organizations, store owners, and community members to address urban food deserts. The Healthy Corner Store Initiative aims to bring fresh fruits and vegetables, taste tests, and nutrition education, to convenience stores throughout the city to engage residents in a healthy lifestyle.

This is just a brief snapshot at some of the work the BNMC team is doing to create a culture of health and wellbeing in our community. Learn more at bnmc-old.local/health.

The Future Is Now: Celebrating Our Wins & Looking Forward

The Future Is Now: Celebrating Our Wins & Looking Forward

We are honored to have spent another year focused on growing our community into a vibrant, innovative environment. Together with our partners, we’re working to improve infrastructure, manage a transportation system, build a culture of health, and drive innovation, job growth and economic development to create a better, more inclusive Buffalo for all. Take a look at some of the things we are most proud of last year that we will continue to focus on in 2019:

Strengthened community partnerships, especially through our BNMC Spark micro-grant program

We are excited to kick off our 2nd year of BNMC Spark by inviting local community members and organizations to wp-contently for grant funding for projects that help strengthen the community in neighborhoods adjacent to the Medical Campus. Through BNMC Spark, a micro-grant pilot program, the BNMC will award a total of $40,000 in 2019 with maximum grants to individual organizations for $3,500 for project grants. The BNMC awarded $37,000 to 17 organizations in 2018 through BNMC Spark.

Joined National Commission to Slash Transportation Energy Use by Half

Matt Enstice, BNMC’s President and CEO was invited to be a part of the national commission launched by the Alliance to Save Energy to develop recommendations to reduce energy use in the U.S. transportation sector by 50 percent by 2050 while meeting future mobility needs. Matt is one of only two representatives from New York State selected for the commission, along with Gil Quiniones, President and CEO of the New York Power Authority and the only representative from Western New York. This year the BNMC joined the Commission in releasing recommendations to cut transportation energy use in half. Read Matt’s column in the Buffalo News to learn why this is important for the BNMC and for our region.

Awarded the USDA Farm-to-Hospital Grant to Create a Healthier Campus

We just began a $351,000, three-year initiative to create a model for health care institutions to integrate technology and cultivate a culture of healthy food practices to increase local food procurement. The BNMC is one of 44 organizations around the country, and one of only 4 organizations to receive funding in New York State, through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Local Food Promotion Program (LFPP) during this grant cycle.

Welcomed More than 20 New Companies and Helped Others Grow in the Innovation Center This Year

We continued to build our community by adding new companies to the Innovation Center and expanding our programming and amenities. New additions include Trove, Rel8ed, and Lender Logix, and we built out new space to accommodate rapid growth of ACV Auctions. There are 75 companies in the Innovation Center today.

Continued to Build Buffalo’s Innovation District

From doubling the number of electric vehicle charging stations across the BNMC, continuing to pursue the development of a campus-wide micro grid and opening a new parking garage to ensure easy access for our growing employee, patient and visitor population, to adding new companies and engaging mature companies, to building a diverse and inclusive community, to making sure people who work on live near have access to healthier foods and active living opportunities, our team has worked hard to create the environment to encourage the dynamic intersection of technology, health, invention and collaboration.

If you have ideas or would like to get involved, please reach out to us. Cheers to a healthy and successful 2019!
