Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus Names Tamar Rothaus Controller

Tamar Rothaus 2Buffalo, N.Y., September 22, 2015 – The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) recently announced the wp-contentointment of Tamar Rothaus as Controller for the non-profit organization that serves as the umbrella organization of the anchor institutions that make up the Medical Campus. Rothaus will oversee the accounting and human resource functions for BNMC.

Rothaus brings a wealth of experience in finance and administration to her new position. Prior to joining the BNMC, Rothaus was the Director or Finance and Administration for People United for Sustainable Housing (PUSH), Buffalo, where she designed, implemented and managed all finance, human resource and administrative functions for the community-driven social justice organization.  She also served as Administrative Director for Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper and as Executive Director of the Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP), Buffalo.  Her experience also includes serving as the interim Executive Director of the Broadway Market Management Corporation, as the Energy Co-op Director with Boston Oil Consumers Alliance (BOCA), Boston, and as a Civil Rights Analyst with the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington D.C.

Rothaus holds a Masters of Business Administration from Yale University School of Management in New Haven, Connecticut, and a Bachelor of Arts in History and Government from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

After-03973As I walk through the Medical Campus and take in all of the construction buzzing all around me, I begin to think about what’s been accomplished and what’s next. Something always comes right to mind as I look back, and it might not be what you’d expect. When I think about what has been accomplished on our Medical Campus, my thoughts go to something far more important, to our community rather than buildings: a change in perception.

There have been many articles recently from New York to Washington to Los Angeles about Buffalo’s ongoing renaissance. Those articles tend to focus on noteworthy physical developments that have taken place here — the cranes in the air, wind turbines churning, craft breweries and food trucks seemingly around every corner.

While those physical developments are remaking the look of our city, the true revolution is that more and more people are shunning the advice of “Buffaloathers” of past generations and choosing to make Buffalo their home. For instance, young college graduates have been rediscovering our city in the beginning of the new century in greater and greater numbers. Last fall the New York Times reported that from 2000 to 2012 there was a 34% change in the number of college graduates aged 25 to 34.

That said, I believe that the most prominent individuals who have chosen Buffalo are not millennials but Kim and Terry Pegula, and their decision is as large as any of the buildings I see rising up around the medical campus. They could have invested anywhere in the world but chose Buffalo, and it has helped transform the mentality of our city. We’ve gone from directing people to look for success outside of Buffalo to telling them, “Why would you want to leave Buffalo; you can succeed here!”CLmbf1GWoAAk_s3

As the owner of Bills and the Sabres, the Pegulas have gotten rid of the attitude that just making the playoffs is something to be satisfied with — the goal is to win the Super Bowls and Stanley Cups. To that end, the Pegulas have outshined their rivals and attracted to the area world-class talent to play and coach for the Bills and Sabres.

Our community needs to follow in their footsteps and draw more of the best and the brightest to our area. Let’s attract more pre-eminent doctors, more first-rate researchers, more successful entrepreneurs and more leading businesses to our community.

Buffalo has always had the assets and infrastructure in place to become a vibrant city in which our people and businesses thrive. It is our turn now to make sure we have the people in place to utilize the buildings we are constructing to ensure our community is successful.

BNMC Access
BNMC Access is a division of BNMC, Inc. which oversees the planning, implementation and day-to-day operations of parking and transportation systems on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. BNMC Access operates under the following guiding principles:

  • Provide ample and convenient parking for patients and visitors with a focus on exceptional customer service.
  • Develop a wide range of efficient transportation and parking options so that BNMC commuters have choices on how they get to work.
  • Encourage the use of alternative transportation modes (transit, carpool, bicycle, walking, etc…) so as to reduce traffic congestion and associated pollution, and utilize scarce land in more economically productive ways.
  • Support compact, transit-oriented, and walkable urban environments.
  • Improve quality of life in the surrounding neighborhoods and mitigate any negative impacts.
  • Strengthen partnerships and develop collaborative solutions to regional transportation issues.

BNMC Access History

Planning and implementation around improving transportation and parking systems has been occurring on the BNMC since its inception in 2002. Below is a summary of some of the more recent initiatives and highlights from over the past five years.

2010

  • BNMC and partners work with Howard/Stein-Hudson Associates and Walker Parking Consultants to develop the BNMC Comprehensive Transportation Study.
  • The BNMC Parking and Transportation Project Management Group (PMG) is formed by representatives from BNMC member institutions to implement recommendations from the Study and to coordinate parking, traffic, transit, bike/ped and transportation infrastructure improvements on the Campus.

2011

  • BNMC and partners at GObike Buffalo and Buffalo CarShare are awarded $206,180 in funds from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to initiate the GO Buffalo Community Transportation Program: a comprehensive public outreach campaign that worked to increase the mobility of the Allentown, Fruit Belt and BNMC communities alike through greater access to alternative modes and knowledge of job opportunities.

2012

  • BNMC completes the construction of the Michigan Goodrich Garage (2,036 spaces over 9 levels) to meet new parking demands and to help accommodate future campus growth.
  • BNMC expands the PMG to include regional transportation and parking planners, policymakers, and service providers to create the BNMC Transportation Management Association (TMA). The TMA is comprised of representatives from member institutions and the NFTA, GBNRTC, NYSDOT, NYSERDA, GObike Buffalo, City of Buffalo, and others.
  • The BNMC TMA is awarded $121,000 from NYS Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and NYS Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to advance Transportation Demand Management (TDM) strategies in order to increase the number of employees choosing to commute via alternative modes. The TMA’s TDM initiatives are branded as GO BNMC, which includes a comprehensive website where employees can seek out transportation information and sign up for various alternative transportation incentive programs (www.gobnmc-old.local)
  • BNMC is awarded $36,256 from the FTA for implementation of Guaranteed Ride Home, a program to provide employees of the BNMC who do not drive alone to work with a timely and inexpensive means of transportation in the event of a personal or family emergency.
  • BNMC and partners work with Greenman-Pederson, Inc and the SUNY Construction Fund to conduct the UB School of Medicine Parking Study, which includes a campus-wide parking analysis for year 2017 (including EIS for new Oishei Children’s Hospital).

2013

  • After the first year of implementing TDM strategies, GO BNMC successfully reduces the number of people driving alone to the Campus from 88% to 83%.
  • BNMC is awarded $249,852 for the operation of an Integrated Mobility Hub – a bicycle parking complex and resource center where visitors can seek out personalized information about their transportation and parking options and information about potential job opportunities on the BNMC (slated to open early 2016). The Mobility Hub will also become the new headquarters for GObike Buffalo and Buffalo BikeShare.
  • BNMC is awarded $162,600 from NYSERDA & NYSDOT for Advancing Smart Card Technologies for Integrated Multi-Modal Transportation, a project to coordinate the planning, development and testing of contactless smart card technologies for the integration of existing transportation and parking services on the BNMC. The program will serve as a step towards the creation of a more efficient, user-friendly and sustainable multi-modal transportation network.

2014

  • BNMC is awarded $84,051 from NYSERDA & NYSDOT to conduct a Policy Research and Feasibility Study of on-street parking in the Fruit Belt Neighborhood, exploring best practices and providing recommendations for the development of a model Residential Parking Benefits District, and/or other alternative strategies.
  • BNMC and National Grid are awarded $1 million from NYSERDA towards the construction of the BNMC Green Commons with $400,000 of which dedicated to the above-referenced Integrated Mobility Hub.
  • BNMC creates the Campus Ambassadors program to improve customer service and promote a safe, friendly and accessible Campus environment.

2015

  • BNMC partners with GBNRTC to develop a regional TMA dubbed GO Buffalo-Niagara.
  • BNMC launches the Neighborhood Parking Study with support from Steering Committee members composed of residents, organizations, and officials.
  • BNMC partners with NFTA to conduct a comprehensive study that will identify collaborative opportunities that can increase transit ridership.

 

2015-2017 Parking and Transportation Stats

Today the BNMC continues to work towards expanding our on-campus parking supply as well as developing satellite parking and transportation options for the campus population. Below is a quick snapshot of the current condition. We also have plans to add additional parking to accommodate the influx of employees as our current construction projects are completed over the next few years.

Current Conditions

  • The BNMC parking system is operating at wp-contentroximately 70% capacity.
  • Parking costs to employees range up to $89; this rate is at or below market rates downtown. Reduced rate parking options are also made available for part-timers.
  • Estimated current commuter mode share on the Campus is:
    • 83% drive alone
    • 8% carpool
    • 2% Metro Bus
    • 2% Metro Rail
    • 2% Metro Bus and Rail (transfer)
    • 2% Walk
    • 1% Bike
  • Over 18% of BNMC projected 2017 population live within one mile and 8.5% within ½ mile of NFTA Metro Rail Stations (including Allen/Medical Campus Station).

Develop Parking Strategies

 

Buffalo, N.Y., August 21, 2015 – Input is being sought from Fruit Belt residents as part of an overall Parking Study designed to research and analyze current parking conditions and to develop potential strategies and recommendations for better management of on-street parking issues in the Fruit Belt neighborhood adjacent to the Medical Campus.

The New York State funded Parking Study is part of a broader study of transportation and parking issues on the Medical Campus and its adjacent neighborhoods of Allentown, Downtown and the Fruit Belt.

Implementation of the Parking Study began this past spring and is intended to address the issues of Medical Campus employee parking in the Fruit Belt Neighborhood, particularly as the Campus grows over the next two years with the addition of the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and the John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital.

Fruit Belt Residents are encouraged to provide input by taking a survey:

  • On-line at https://surveymonkey.com/r/FruitBeltSurvey.
  • In person at the Moot Community Center at 292 High Street on Thursday, August 27th from 5-7pm.
  • In their homes through surveys conducted by a team of BNMC representatives and residents serving on the Parking Study steering committee who will go door-to-door in the Fruit Belt neighborhood during the week of August 24th.
  • By picking up a printed copy of the survey at local Block Club meetings, the Moot Senior Center or by contacting the BNMC at 218-7806.

The BNMC is facilitating the Parking Study for the community to develop parking management strategies to effectively manage the on-street parking supply and demand, and ultimately to improve the access, mobility and quality of life for Fruit Belt residents.  The BNMC has been actively involved in developing and implementing transportation and parking strategies for the Medical Campus and its adjacent neighborhoods since 2010, frequently gaining insight from residents at its quarterly Four Neighborhoods, One Community meetings. A steering committee made up of residents, local officials, community organizations and the BNMC has been working together on issues pertaining to parking, and the Parking Study in particular, since early 2015.

The resident survey is one part of the overall Parking Study that will also include a review of current policies and legislation related to parking and transportation issues and field investigations of parking patterns in the neighborhood. The BNMC will also consider best practices in other cities with similar issues to assist in developing recommendations and strategies for the Fruit Belt neighborhood regarding parking.

BNMC, Inc. operates its programs and services without regard to race, color, and national origin in accordance with Title VI of the Civil Right Act. Any person who believes she or he has been aggrieved by any unlawful discriminatory practice under Title VI may file a complaint with BNMC Inc.

TITLE VI COMPLAINT PROCEDURE

Any person who believes she or he has been discriminated against on the basis of race, color, or national origin by BNMC Inc. may file a Title VI complaint by completing and submitting the agency’s Title VI Complaint Form. BNMC Inc. investigates complaints received no more than 180 days after the alleged incident. BNMC Inc. will process complaints that are complete.

Once the complaint is received, BNMC Inc. will review it to determine if our office has jurisdiction. The complainant will receive an acknowledgement letter informing her/him whether the complaint will be investigated by our office.

BNMC Inc. has 30 days to investigate the complaint. If more information is needed to resolve the case, the Authority may contact the complainant. The complainant has 5 business days from the date of the letter to send requested information to the investigator assigned to the case. If the investigator is not contacted by the complainant or does not receive the additional information within 5 business days, the Authority can administratively close the case. A case can be administratively closed also if the complainant no longer wishes to pursue their case.

After the investigator reviews the complaint, she/he will issue one of two letters to the complainant: a closure letter or a letter of finding (LOF). A closure letter summarizes the allegations and states that there was not a Title VI violation and that the case will be closed. An LOF summarizes the allegations and the interviews regarding the alleged incident, and explains whether any disciplinary action, additional training of the staff member, or other action will occur. If the complainant wishes to wp-contenteal the decision, she/he has 30 days after the date of the letter or the LOF to do so.

The purpose of the BNMC Fit event is to motivate, inform, and empower employees by offering knowledge and support of eating healthy, active living, and making small steps towards success in building a healthy future. Four New Companies to Locate to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus

New Tenants to be located at 73 High Street

BUFFALO, N.Y., June 25, 2015 – The BNMC announced today the addition of four new companies to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, all of whom will be located at BNMC’s life sciences incubator at 73 High Street. The new tenants include Healthcare Hub, Rehoboth, DeconSure and Photolitec. The 30,000 square foot space, operated by BNMC as part of its portfolio of workspace options for young and emerging companies, also includes current tenants Cleveland BioLabs and Buffalo BioLabs.

The new tenants include:

  • Healthcare Hub, A licensed wholesale distributor of medical supplies, equipment and pharmaceuticals that is currently developing eco-friendly supplies for medical institutions. The company has recently relocated from Tennessee.
  • Rehoboth, currently developing a diagnostic bio-sensor that can detect specific molecules and may have wp-contentlications for testing water and other uses.
  • DeconSure, relocating from the United Kingdom, is a contamination control company focused on testing and improving the effectiveness of sterilization procedures, primarily for hospitals, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and medical devices.
  • Photolitec LLC, a company spun off from Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in 2010 to develop and commercialize photosensitizing agents and technologies used in photodynamic therapy (PDT). This unique FDA-wp-contentroved cancer treatment, which was developed at Roswell Park, combines light-sensitizing drugs with laser light to offer treatment options that are just as effective as other cancer therapies but with fewer side effects and long-term impacts on quality of life.

According to Vic Nole, Director of Business Development for the BNMC, “The life sciences incubator in close proximity to the medical, research and education communities on Campus, in combination with the entrepreneurial culture here have been very attractive to start-up companies. We are thrilled to be able to offer a variety of workspace options and that these companies have chosen to join the Medical Campus community permanently.”

Nole noted that the services of Ignite, BNMC’s business development office, are available to the new companies and that he expects they will take advantage of the free services in varying degrees. “For some of these entrepreneurs, our biggest role is in making introductions to others on Campus, while others many need more mentoring and traditional incubation-type services, all offered through Ignite. We see our role as providing the support and connections where ever possible and aligning wp-contentropriate services with the needs of each individual company.”

Ignite actively identifies and evaluates new business opportunities, educates and provides mentorship to entrepreneurs, and creates, incubates, and grows new companies in Buffalo.

In addition to 73 High Street, the BNMC also owns and operates the Thomas R. Beecher Jr. Innovation Center that is designed to accommodate small and mid-size companies seeking office, wet lab and/or research space, on a month-to-month basis or via longer-term leases. The facility is designed as a “plug ‘n play” set-up whereby tenants enjoy a fully operational office setting without having to handle office and facilities issues such as phone, Internet and other services. Tenants also have access to collaborative space, conference rooms, kitchen facilities and other amenities. Additional workspace also includes dig (design innovation garage) co-working space, available to those who do not need full office amenities. Dig is also located at the Innovation Center at 640 Ellicott Street in the former Trico building.

The Buffalo News recently highlighted the Thomas R. Beecher Innovation Center on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and the creation of the entrepreneurial ecosystem for new and growing companies. This growth, coupled with economic development on and near the Medical Campus, is bringing a sense of optimism and excitement to Buffalo.

For some in the adjacent neighborhoods, however, growth brings with it a sense of concern about its impact and whether they can share in Buffalo’s renaissance. The good news is that the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus shares many of the same goals as our neighbors and the organizations that serve them.

The strategic vision of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC), the nonprofit created to address shared issues among member institutions and nearby neighborhoods, is to revitalize our community on and beyond the campus. The BNMC is actively engaged in initiatives that ensure that the needs of stakeholders – patients, neighbors, visitors, employees and our overall community – are considered and planned for as the campus grows.

This wp-contentroach, called MutualCity, is designed to leverage the assets of the Medical Campus to help to build a stronger Buffalo.

We know we can’t do this alone, which is why we seek opportunities to learn more. We have canvassed our neighborhoods to gain input on issues, including barriers to jobs and transportation issues. We host open “Four Neighborhoods, One Community” meetings to discuss critical issues with neighbors, and we regularly attend neighborhood meetings and events.

We are connecting nearby residents and employers by opening up communication, sharing job and business opportunities and providing training. We offer mentoring and workspace to those who want to create and grow businesses. We are addressing access by promoting alternative transportation options, including carpooling, biking, CarShare and transit while creating a healthier environment. By improving streetscapes, we are working to create a safe, walkable and accessible campus designed to enhance a sense of neighborhood.

We are working with local officials to study parking issues and encourage changes to current policies that will help local residents. We also support efforts made through the City of Buffalo and others to help local homeowners and renters stay in their neighborhoods.

The positive impact of the Medical Campus is being realized in many ways, including improved health care and in educating the next generation. By continuing to work together, we believe we can help build a new Buffalo that is enjoyed by all.

BNMC Statement in Support of Parking Permit Legislation for Fruit Belt Residents

The BNMC, the not-for-profit organization formed to address shared issues among institutions on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and our adjacent neighborhoods, strongly supports legislation proposed by State Senator Tim Kennedy and Assemblymember Crystal Peoples-Stokes and supported by Buffalo Common Council President Darius Pridgen, that would ensure that Fruit Belt residents have access to parking in their neighborhood through a new parking permit system designed specifically for the Fruit Belt.

We are very cognizant of the fact that as the Medical Campus grows, the need for an adequate parking and transportation system for local residents, employees, patients, and visitors will continue to grow as well. We have been working diligently with a number of local stakeholders including our neighbors, the Medical Campus institutions, the NFTA, Department of Transportation and the City of Buffalo to develop overall strategies and programs to address parking and transportation needs, including providing various parking options, enhancing and creating new alternative modes of transportation, and programs aimed at incentivizing use of carpooling, public transit, biking, and walking.

The BNMC, working closely with nearby residents and local elected officials, has secured funding from NYSERDA/NYSDOT to facilitate the planning and implementation of a residential parking benefits district that will effectively manage the on-street parking supply and demand as well as improve the access, mobility and quality of life of Fruit Belt residents.

For the Medical Campus to be successful, we must consider the needs of our adjacent neighborhoods as well as the needs of the employees, patients, and visitors. We believe this legislation will help to ease the current situation that often leaves local residents with few options for parking near their homes. We wp-contentlaud the work of Senator Kennedy and Assemblymember Peoples-Stokes and the rest of the Western New York delegation, as well as Councilmember Pridgen, and urge the New York State Legislature to pass this legislation.

Matt discussed how the BNMC, the not for profit founded to leverage the Medical Campus institutions, is building on the assets of the Medical Campus to support our mission of furthering economic growth, igniting urban revitalization, and building a strong, thriving community.

BUFFALO, N.Y., May 20, 2015 – Six companies have become the newest tenants at the Thomas R. Beecher, Jr. Innovation Center on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, bringing the total number of start-up and growing companies, as well as the businesses that provide services to them, to nearly 100. The new tenants include Buffalo Rising, Inc, Campagnolo Bonk PLLC, Pitch + Pivot LLC, theBREWROOM, The Synergy Group and Triple Track HR Partners.

Located at 640 Ellicott Street, the Innovation Center welcomed its new tenants on May 1st. They represent a variety of businesses, and include theBREWROOM, a digital/internet marketing services company that “graduated” to the Innovation Center Suites after being a member of dig, the BNMC Inc.’s coworking space. Also joining the Innovation Center are Buffalo Rising, Inc., a website covering Buffalo’s positive and interesting news, with over 3 million annual visitors; Pitch + Pivot, a sales and marketing consulting firm; and The Synergy Group, a consulting firm specializing in work/life strategy development. New tenants also include Campagnolo Bonk PLLC, providing a comprehensive array of health care consulting, audit, operational and management services to health care providers; and Triple Track HR Partners, providing human resource consulting for businesses throughout Western New York.

According to Vic Nole, Director of Business Development for the BNMC Inc., “The Innovation Center continues to draw new tenants as small, start-up businesses and the companies that provide services to them realize the unique opportunities here for networking and collaboration. We are delighted to provide an entrepreneurial culture that can help young companies get off the ground and to encourage connections among our tenants that can help them gain insight, share experiences and, we hope, take advantage of each other’s product and service offerings. We find our tenants love the flexible workspace that the Innovation Center offers as their companies grow and their needs change.”

All of the companies will be located on the fourth floor in the Innovation Center Suites, and will have privileges to use dig, located on the first floor. Pitch+Pivot also added two additional dig memberships for their staff in addition to workspace at the Suites.

The LEED-certified Innovation Center opened in 2010 with two tenants and is designed to accommodate small and mid-size companies seeking office, wet lab and/or research space, on a month-to-month basis or via longer-term leases. Owned and operated by BNMC Inc., the facility is designed as a “plug ‘n play” set-up whereby tenants enjoy a fully operational office setting without having to handle office and facilities issues such as phone, Internet and other services. Tenants also have access to collaborative space, conference rooms, kitchen facilities and other amenities. The Innovation Center also serves as the physical location for Ignite, BNMC Inc.’s business development program, that actively identifies and evaluates new business opportunities, educates and provides mentorship to entrepreneurs, and creates, incubates, and grows new companies in Buffalo.

Workspace also available through BNMC Inc. includes dig coworking space, available to those who do not need full office amenities, and traditional leased office space at the Innovation Center and at 73 High Street on the Medical Campus.

Walking on Wednesdays is Back!

Walk during your lunch hour with your co-workers! Walking on Wednesdays (W.O.W.) , a great mid-day break walk, will get you back to work refreshed and ready to tackle the afternoon.

Join us at the RPCI Kaminski Park every Wednesday on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. Walks are wp-contentroximately 1.5 miles. All walks begin at 12:10 p.m. and end at 12:40 p.m. Be sure to dress for the weather as walks take place whether it rains or shines, except if there is lightning.

Stop by the RPCI Farmer’s Market beginning June1 every Wednesday from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. before or after each walk to get some fresh vegetables, fruits, jams, baked goods and more.

For your comfort and safety, please remember:

  • Wear proper, comfortable footwear
  • Watch for eye-level bushes and trees
  • Watch for broken concrete, potholes and uneven surfaces
  • Obey all traffic signs and signals
  • Alert walk leaders and other walkers of unsafe conditions
  • Walk leaders have cell phones and should be notified of any incidents so they can summon help if necessary
  • Sun protection: sun block, (should be wp-contentlied a half hour before exposure) sunglasses, wide-brimmed hat
  • Adequate hydration before, after and during the walk.

Allen Medical Campus Metro Rail Station Temporary Closure

metroBeginning on Monday, April 20, 2015 the Allen Medical Campus Metro Rail Station will be temporarily closed. The  station is expected to be closed for wp-contentroximately 3-4 weeks. Between these dates, there will be no passenger access to the Allen Medical Campus Rail Station. The closing is a result of ongoing construction taking place at the Allen Medical Campus Metro Rail Station, as the University at Buffalo continues to build its new School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences facility, which will be built over the existing rail station.
During the temporary closure, there will be free, daily Metro Bus Shuttle service (see schedule) available to avoid disruption of service to Metro Rail customers. Shuttle intervals will coincide with the daily rail schedule at 10- minute intervals during peak periods. Shuttle buses are ADA accessible for individuals with mobility devices.

Here are some tips to help make your commutes stress free:

  • On your way to work get off the Metro Rail at the Summer-Best station.
  • Make sure to have your rail card with you for access to shuttle busses.
  • Take the shuttle bus to the Summer-Best station.
  • Take the Metro Rail to your final destination.

For your safety, NFTA officers will be amping up surveillance along the temporary Metro Bus Shuttle route. Specific attention will be paid at and near all shuttle route stops.

Event to Showcase Resources for Entrepreneurs

Free public event includes 20 organizations that assist those starting businesses in WNY

 

BNMC-0175 Entrepreneur Fair v51Buffalo, N.Y., February 19, 2015 – Ignite, the business development office of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. (BNMC Inc.) will host an event for the community on March 21 to showcase the many and varied resources available to those interested in, or already involved in starting a new business in Western New York. The event will include 20 organizations dedicating to supporting start-ups.

The first-of-its-kind event will be held in dig, the BNMC’s co-working and event space on the Medical Campus at 640 Ellicott Street. It will be held from noon until 5 pm and will include opportunities for entrepreneurs to learn more about organizations that can assist in developing business ideas, creating business plans and models, securing funding and tax incentives, building networks and providing additional services relevant to new businesses.

According to Vic Nole, director of Business Development at BNMC, Inc., “There has never been a better time to start a business in this community given the creation and emergence of so many organizations dedicated to helping start ups. It is important to show those with an idea or a start-up business how to access the resources that they need most effectively. This event will bring together the leaders of Western New York’s emerging entrepreneurial ecosystem and provide an opportunity for the public to get to know what they have to offer.”

Participating organizations include Algonquin Studios- VCamp, Buffalo Angels, Buffalo State College Small Business Development Center, Buffalo Urban League, dig, FIKA, 43North, Innovation Hotspot, Jacobs Institute, Launch NY, StartUp Grind Buffalo, StartUp NY, The Foundry, UB Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, UB Center for Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences, UB Center for Excellence in Materials Informatics, Westminster Economic Development Initiative, Western New York Venture Association and Z80 Labs.

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. (BNMC Inc.) and First Niagara N.A. announced the second round of awardees for their Seed Capital Accelerator funds.

The recipients, GradFly and Buffalo CarShare, will use the funds to help improve the physical and economic health of the communities on and around the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

“Thanks to a continued partnership with First Niagara, we are able to help a new company GradFly, grow its business, and to continue to support our longtime partner, Buffalo CarShare as they add critical services for the community. This type of support complements the full array of resources we offer through Ignite, our business development office, that are designed to identify, evaluate, and support new business opportunities for the purpose of creating and incubating new companies and jobs in the Buffalo region,” said Vic Nole, director of new business development for the BNMC Inc.

“First Niagara is committed to enhancing and accelerating business development on and around the medical campus. We are proud to provide the resources and momentum needed to boost redevelopment in our City and help create jobs,” said Buford Sears, First Niagara Regional President, Western New York.

GradFly has been awarded a $10,000 loan to expand its strategy for creating collaborative online learning environments for academic and industry partners. GradFly is an online community where STEM students and professionals can create a portfolio to document and showcase their technical projects in a beautiful way.  These projects center around robotics, open source hardware and software, 3D printing, arduino, raspberry pi, drones, and similar technologies. Our members also use GradFly to find resources, talent, and example projects to help them with products or concepts they are trying to design.

“In our current state, we could easily enter several markets at once but we need to be strategic about how we enter each one,” said Oscar Pedroso, founder of Gradfly.  “Thanks to the BNMC/First Niagara Seed Accelerator funding, we will focus on refining our strategic plan to identify our most valuable target markets.”

Buffalo CarShare, a community-driven organization that advances affordable and environmentally friendly transportation, has been awarded an $8,000 loan to leverage a matching grant that will allow CarShare to purchase a wheel chair accessible van. The van allows Buffalo CarShare to expand its business model and provide additional services to elderly and disabled residents of our surrounding neighborhoods.

“Buffalo CarShare is excited to announce that we will be adding a wheelchair accessible van to our fleet, thanks to the BNMC/First Niagara accelerator funding. Through this addition, BCS now has the opportunity to launch a new program focused around transportation and mobility for the elderly and disabled community, aiming for a February 2015 launch,” said Michael Galligano, executive director of Buffalo CarShare. “Buffalo CarShare will soon expand the service to provide increased access for residents, patients, and other community members around the Medical Campus.”

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Early-stage entrepreneurs can learn how to transform their ideas into a successful business, thanks to a new program in the University at Buffalo School of Management’s Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership (CEL).

The Startup CEL program will provide specialized support and guidance to young, innovation-driven companies as they navigate the complex pathway to commercializing their product, service or technology.

Startup CEL will launch this February in partnership with Ignite, the business development program of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) Inc., and UB’s New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences (CBLS).

“At the CEL, we proudly support entrepreneurs as they launch, grow and sustain successful businesses that create jobs and invigorate our regional economy,” says Thomas Ulbrich, assistant dean and executive director of the CEL. “For individuals who are just beginning to take their ideas to market, the Startup CEL program will provide crucial knowledge and strategic insights, as well as a valuable support network of entrepreneurs, to increase their probability for success.”

Using the Disciplined Entrepreneurship framework, the Startup CEL program will offer a comprehensive, integrated and proven step-by-step wp-contentroach to creating innovative, highly successful products. Participants will learn to understand their customer, focus on key market opportunities, overcome obstacles, scale a business and understand and communicate with potential investors.

The BNMC and Ignite will provide workspace at both the Thomas R. Beecher Jr. Innovation Center and at dig, a co-working space designed to help entrepreneurs form, refine and launch their business ideas. In addition, Ignite will provide mentoring, networking and collaboration opportunities, and help identify potential class participants through its relationship with entrepreneurs working at the Innovation Center, dig and other facilities on the medical campus and in the community.

“Startup CEL is a perfect fit with Ignite and is one more step in the BNMC’s goal of cultivating an entrepreneurial ecosystem and a culture of innovation and collaboration in our region, while providing the tools young companies need to develop their ideas into sustainable businesses,” says Vic Nole, director of new business development at BNMC Inc.

“The CBLS is excited to continue our successful collaboration with the CEL through the Startup CEL program, which will enhance our region by preparing innovative entrepreneurs for both the technical and business aspects of launching their companies,” says Amy Schmit, director of management and strategic implementation at CBLS.

The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. received $650,000 to construct above-ground pedestrian bridges connecting new infrastructure on the BNMC. These bridges are a reflection of the collaborative efforts among the BNMC institutions and partners, including the University at Buffalo, Kaleida Health, and Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

“This funding ensures wp-contentropriate access from the NFTA station and the University at Buffalo’s new School of Medicine and Biomedical to the rest of the Medical Campus. The bridges will also encourage critical connections and collaboration among the partners on and around the Medical Campus,” said Matthew K. Enstice, President & CEO, Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. “Thank you to Governor Cuomo and the entire REDC for supporting this important effort for our community.”

“The pedestrian bridge funded by this grant is essential to our plans for a new medical school in downtown Buffalo because it will provide the university with a direct link to our partners on and adjacent to the BNMC,” said Michael Cain, M.D., Vice President for Health Sciences at UB and Dean of the medical school.  “Strengthening these partnerships is of the utmost importance to Buffalo’s academic health center and is one of the reasons UB chose to move its medical school downtown.”

Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC Inc.) Launches  “Ignite” to Support Entrepreneurship and Create  New Local Businesses

BUFFALO, N.Y. November 24, 2014 — The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. (BNMC Inc.) announced today that it has formally launched Ignite, a full complement of resources designed to identify, evaluate, and support new business opportunities for the purpose of creating and incubating all types of new companies and jobs in the Buffalo region.

Ignite is a program for new business development that actively facilitates collaboration among researchers, inventors, industry leaders, investors, students, and services providers. It includes workspace, business services, mentoring, access to capital, programming, networking opportunities and collaboration to help entrepreneurs and innovators move ideas into businesses that can create jobs.

Ignite offers a continuum of resources to entrepreneurs at every stage of business development, including those who just have an idea for a business to those who are much farther along in the development and commercialization of a product, technology platform, or service. Ignite includes existing resources offered through BNMC Inc, including dig, a co-working space designed for those in the early stage of developing a business or idea, as well as office and laboratory space, mentoring and networking for emerging companies currently offered at BNMC properties including the Thomas R. Beecher, Jr. Innovation Center at 640 Ellicott Street, BNMC’s life sciences incubator at 73 High Street, and the Innovation Center Annex at 847 Main Street.

Services offered through Ignite include initial evaluation of business ideas, guidance on developing a business plan, education and mentoring on a variety of business design and launch strategies, connections to experts who can help move ideas to the next stage, and a full complement of networking events.

According to Vic Nole, BNMC Inc. Director of New Business Development, Ignite unites BNMC’s business development services under one unified identity and is one more step in fostering entrepreneurship, creativity and collaboration with the overall goal of creating more jobs in the region. “In addition to providing workspace, business services, and networking opportunities, we will be pro-active is identifying, evaluating, incubating and helping to grow start-up companies. We believe that cultivating this entrepreneurial eco-system will provide a culture of innovation and collaboration while providing the tools necessary to further develop ideas into viable businesses,” said Nole.

BNMC Inc. operates the Innovation Center, a LEED-certified research and development space housing early stage companies, as well as companies offering support services like access to capital, intellectual property attorneys, talent acquisition, accounting, sales, and marketing. The space is designed to accommodate small to medium companies seeking office space, wet lab and/or research space. The Suites at the Innovation Center is an incubator that offers physical and virtual office space on a month-to-month basis and includes telephone and Internet access. The Innovation Center also houses dig, a collaborative co-work space created to help people turn their idea into a business.

Ignite will work together with other partners and local incubators to ensure that young companies are connected to the right resources and networking opportunities to support their business growth. Companies from all industry segments, including non-profit organizations are welcome to take advantage of Ignite resources.

BNMC Inc. also encourages larger established companies to get involved with Ignite through sponsorships or other partnerships that can provide opportunities for new companies in Buffalo’s emerging start-up community to connect to established industry sectors.
