A Conversation with Vic Nole

Vic Nole joined the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. (BNMC) in early 2014 as Director of Business Development, heading up the non-profit organization’s focus on building Buffalo’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Vic is a life sciences industry executive with more than 20 years of operations, business management, and entrepreneurial experience.  Prior to the BNMC, he managed a private consulting firm that focused on helping life science researchers and inventors to bring their products and technologies to market. He also served as President of Invitrogen Corporation’s GIBCO cell culture products division, Vice President of Manufacturing Operations for Strategic Diagnostics, Inc., Vice President of Site Operations for Life Technologies Inc., and as General Manager and Chief Operating Officer for United Biochemicals.

As a former researcher, entrepreneur, and life science business executive, what attracted you to working at the BNMC?

While at Invitrogen, my focus was to develop a business model for our cell biology business that became very successful and during that time I became involved with BUFFLink, a group of local business leaders that was trying to catalyze the life sciences work being done here as an economic driver for the region. It was really ahead of its time, but it afforded me the opportunity to learn about a lot of cool research that was going on at UB and Roswell Park Cancer Institute. At that time, there was no formal mechanism for creating new companies based on local research. Most of the intellectual property generated by research being done here was licensed and then left the area. I saw a lot of opportunity in changing that, especially as the Medical Campus began to grow. Years later, while running my consulting business, I had a number of connections to some of the work being done on Campus in life sciences and my interest grew. The actual connection to BNMC came when I attended a social networking event, Beakers and Beer, and started a conversation about creating and attracting new life science companies to Buffalo with Pat Whalen, BNMC’s COO at the time. Joining the team was a perfect fit for me and my background and it gave me the opportunity to stay in Buffalo and contribute to the region.

How do you see the role of the BNMC in the region’s entrepreneurial community?

The Innovation Center has really become the epicenter of entrepreneurial activity on the Medical Campus and in the region. With a full offering of workspace, business services, mentoring, networking and the assets of the overall Campus, it offers resources for those that are starting with just an idea, to companies that are already in the marketplace and growing.

My role, and that of the BNMC, is to provide support for young companies throughout the design, launch, and growth process, so my work can be all over the board depending on where in the development pipeline a young company needs help. We get involved in everything from helping companies develop their business model, to teaching the commercialization process, to connecting them to the resources and service providers they may need to run their business.

Our role is a little different than most incubators in that we don’t take a fee or an equity stake in companies that we work with. Our mission is to create jobs and to actively participate in Buffalo’s revitalization, so we see creating, building and attracting businesses to the area as the most important things that we do.

How do you typically work with a start up company?

We always start with a conversation. Many times, starts-up will come to us looking for connections to the VC community believing that what they need is money. We take the wp-contentroach of asking a lot of questions to determine what they really need at that specific point in their evolution, and often times it is something very different than what they originally thought. Other times people will ask for help with a business plan, when figuring out what their product or business model actually is can be a more important first step. We like to teach them the commercialization process so they know what they are in for, help them to vet their value proposition for market viability, and then get them connected to the right resources to accelerate their growth.

What changes have you seen since you began working with BNMC nearly three years ago?

One of my biggest concerns when I started was the willingness of those working in the local entrepreneurial space to collaborate. Ten years ago things were very parochial with people working in silos and protecting their turf. Around the time I joined the BNMC, however, there were also a number of others in the life sciences community who were starting in new business development roles and I think we all had the sense that talking to each other, working together and leveraging our connections was going to make everyone more successful. The community is far more collaborative then it has ever been and there is a lot of willingness to guide start-ups to other incubators or resources if they can be better served. You can see these connections on display at various networking events around town. Everyone seems to be working for the greater good – building a better Buffalo!

The other really important change has been that we have some very real successes to point to. There is a big difference between talking about what you want to do and actually demonstrating that success. Five years ago there was no functioning eco-system to speak of. Today, there are nearly 120 companies that have a presence here on the medical campus so there is a lot of talent, skills and other resources that can be leveraged to attract new companies.

What type of company could really benefit by working with the Medical Campus?

It really starts with the assets we have on Campus. Any start-up in the area of life sciences would be well served given the world-class research, clinical resources, and our focus on bioengineering, bioinformatics, genomics and similar fields that can be found here. It is an ideal setting for companies focused on healthcare, therapeutics, diagnostics, and medical devices.  We also have a growing core of technology companies that are supported by other incubator programs here at the Innovation Center like 43North and Z80 Labs.

We don’t limit our work to life science and tech companies, however, as we frequently work with businesses of all types. We especially like to help social innovators and entrepreneurs who live in our adjacent neighborhoods because these groups are working to improve and enrich our surrounding community. And we are proud of our role as connectors and facilitators, shepherding people and companies to those resources in the community that can be most helpful in ensuring their business success.

What’s next – how do you see the next few years in terms of entrepreneurial growth?

I believe we are poised for exponential growth now that we have demonstrated success. It is tough to sell a concept but we now have tangible assets – growing companies, life science expertise, physical space and a networked community dedicated to getting companies on their feet and growing. We also have proximity to Toronto and we are in great position to offer Canadian companies a gateway to the U.S. market.  One of the other really exciting and encouraging developments is that young people want to be here and they tend to be entrepreneurial. Our challenge now is keeping our home grown talent here in town, attracting new talent from outside of Buffalo, and then connecting those young people to exciting new business opportunities.

Empire State Development has named the Thomas R. Beecher Jr. Innovation Center on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus a state certified incubator, a designation that includes funding of up to $625,000 over five years to support local entrepreneurs.

The Innovation Center at 640 Ellicott St. now joins the state’s network of regional hotspots and certified business incubators. The designation and funding, $125,000 per year over five years, are part of the governor’s Regional Economic Development Councils.

The Innovation Center opened in 2010 and is one of three locations, and additional properties, where the Medical Campus organization serves more than 120 companies and startups.

The Medical Campus will use the Empire State Development funding to expand its business development programming at the Innovation Center, starting with the launch of the i4 Studio, an idea lab that teaches how to wp-contently creative thinking in the entrepreneurial process. Additional money will support the development of product prototypes and helping company founders connect with investors.

New i4 Studio on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus to teach the wp-contentlication of creativity to the business planning process

Buffalo, N.Y., January 23, 2017 – The Innovation Center, powered by the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. has announced the launch of i4 Studio, the first Idea Lab located in Western New York, in collaboration with the International Center for Studies in Creativity located at SUNY Buffalo State.

Located at the Innovation Center, i4 Studio will wp-contently creative thinking tools and processes to generate breakthroughs in idea generation, creative problem solving, strategic planning, and business modeling. The methodologies employed are designed to significantly improve personal and professional performance, and will be particularly focused on assisting entrepreneurs and start-up companies in the wp-contentlication of creativity to the business planning process.

Intended as a hub for creative thinking, i4 Studio was created to stimulate imagination, inspiration, ideation and innovation.  The studio will offer workshops and programming designed to spur creative thinking and problem solving that can be employed to address business challenges or to develop new concepts and ideas.

Official launch of i4Studio is scheduled for February 28 with a launch party to be held in the new studio space on the second floor of the Innovation Center at 640 Ellicott Street from 5 pm – 7 pm. Registration for the free event can be found at the events page at www.i4studiobuffalo.com.

Offerings will include private consultation to define and address challenges, comprehensive programs to learn the creative problem solving process for improving personal or professional performance, intensive workshops employing “trained brains” – industry experts and those trained in the creative problem solving process to help facilitate the creative problem solving process, as well as programs designed for entire teams focused on strategic planning and team building.

The concept for i4 Studios was a result of collaboration between Vic Nole, Director of Business Development for the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. and Roger Firestien, a senior faculty member of the International Center for Studies in Creativity (ICSC).  Part of SUNY Buffalo State and the first program to offer the science of creativity at the graduate level, ICSC is globally recognized for its programs that cultivate skills in creative thinking, innovative leadership practices and problem solving skills.

According to Nole, “As any entrepreneur can attest, the need for creative idea generation and problem solving can be critical to getting a start-up off the ground. Understanding that many of the principles of creative thinking can be taught, it seemed like a natural fit to work with ICSC and to bring more creative resources to the heart of Buffalo’s entrepreneurial community at the Innovation Center.  We are thrilled to be able to add another critical tool to our tool kit that can help young companies work through their business challenges and potentially find new and better ways to model their businesses.”

In addition to housing i4 Studio, the BNMC team will provide administrative oversight and business development resources. Both Nole and Firestien will serve as co-directors of i4 Studio.

BNMC’s Innovation Center to Host Startup Grind

BNMC Team Member Sean Heidinger Selected as New Co-Director of Google Entrepreneurial Forum

 

Buffalo, N.Y., September 26, 2016 – The Thomas R. Beecher Jr. Innovation Center on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus will continue to host Startup Grind Buffalo, Powered by Google for Entrepreneurs, and Sean Heidinger, Manager of the dig co-working space at the Innovation Center will serve as co-director along with David Murphy, Programmer Analyst of Rich Products who continues in the co-director role. Startup Grind is the largest independent startup community, actively educating, inspiring, and connecting 400,000 founders in over 200 cities. The monthly events, featuring speakers in the entrepreneurial community, nurture startup ecosystems in 85 countries.

Zach Schneider, founder of 15 Fingers, a digital branding and marketing firm, and founder/owner of Ru’s Pierogi will be the first of this season’s featured speakers this Thursday, September 29 at 7pm. 

Startup Grind Buffalo has been active in the Buffalo area since 2014, helping to connect entrepreneurs with each other for a monthly conversation about issues and ideas impacting those with new and emerging businesses. The Buffalo Chapter and its events will now have a permanent home within Western New York’s largest start-up incubator at the Innovation Center where BNMC, Inc., 43 North, Z80 Labs and more hthan 80 start up and growing companies are located. Startup Grind Buffalo had previously been led in the Buffalo area by Eben Piazza, before he re-located to San Diego.

Heidinger, who currently manages dig, the co-working and event space at the Innovation Center, will be responsible for event logistics, securing speakers, attracting sponsors and all promotional activity for the monthly meet-ups. Vic Nole, director of Business Development for BNMC, will lead a board of advisors that will oversee Startup Grind Buffalo activities as well as assist with speaker and sponsor attraction.

According to Nole, “As long time supporters of the entrepreneurial community, we are thrilled that Startup Grind Buffalo will be a regular offering at the Innovation Center. Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. to Acquire Former Osmose Holdings, Inc. Property at 980 Ellicott Street

Adding Property Addresses Need for Additional Office Space and Parking

 

Buffalo, N.Y., June 29, 2016 – The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. (BNMC) today announced plans to purchase property located at 980 Ellicott Street on the Medical Campus from Osmose Holdings, Inc. The 4.4-acre site is located on the northern end of the Medical Campus and includes the majority of the block bordered by Ellicott, Main, Best and Dodge Streets. It includes office, laboratory and warehouse space, as well as two parking lots with wp-contentroximately 200 spaces. The deal is expected to close late this summer.

Plans for the property have not been finalized although it will likely include renovations to the existing buildings in order to make it available to current companies on the Medical Campus that are in need of additional office and/or laboratory space, and to new companies seeking to locate to the Medical Campus. The current parking lot will provide additional Campus parking. The property is ideally located adjacent to the Summer-Best Metro rail station.

BNMC Presents Free Lunch Time Concert Series Featuring Local Musicians Employed

What: The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. will resume  “Tunes in the Tent,” its popular lunchtime concert series, each Thursday at noon in the heart of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.  The 6-week concert series will feature local bands, all of which include at least one Medical Campus employee. The free concert is open to the public and all are encouraged to grab lunch and enjoy these talented employees and other local musicians performing original music and popular favorites every Thursday this summer!

Six private offices added to accommodate start up growth on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus

Buffalo, N.Y., March 11, 2016 – The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus recently completed the build-out and leasing of six new, private offices in its dig cowork and event space at the Thomas R. Beecher Jr. Innovation Center to accommodate growing demand for workspace from the start-up community.  The six offices have been built within the 6,000 square foot space on the first floor of the Innovation Center, Buffalo’s largest business incubator that houses start-up and emerging companies, as well as the businesses that provide services to them. The Innovation Center serves more than 100 companies and nearly 500 employees.

The six companies leasing the new offices represent a combination of those moving up from coworking at dig to more permanent office space, as well as new companies joining the Innovation Center community. Those leasing the new offices include:

  • Girls Education Collaborative supports and promotes the efforts of local communities in developing countries to improve educational opportunities for girls. The non-profit had been located in the Suites at the Innovation Center and will now have expanded office space in the new dig offices.
  • JMS Technical Solutions, Inc. a former dig member, is an international technology consulting and staffing firm.
  • Norris Clifton Creative, also a former dig member, is a boutique-marketing group offering advertising, marketing, branding & identity, web services and photography.
  • A former dig member, The Parson Group, LLC is the parent company with subsidiaries in the fields of Philanthropy and Social Engagement (The Black Diamond Society™), Educational Training and Development (The AppleTree Agency™) and Mobile Application Development (HIPPO™).
  • Tipping Point Communications expanded beyond its Rochester headquarters to Buffalo and offers marketing, public relations and digital media services.
  • 911Flex, LLC (formerly 911Next) brokers public safety and national security products and services and was a dig member previously. The company shares the office space with Plur-al-ity Press, which aspires to be the lead generator of sophisticated thought-images advancing how both image and language are consumed and created while assisting writers in deepening their craft.

According to Vic Nole, Director of Business Development for the BNMC Inc., “We recognized that there was a growing demand from dig members whose companies were maturing and had a need for more permanent and private office space. We see this as an indication of a very healthy entrepreneurial environment as companies realize success and have a need for greater resources to continue to grow their businesses. We are more than hwp-contenty to be able to accommodate those needs with these new offices.”

The office are designed to accommodate one to four individuals and are constructed with clear glass walls and doors, providing users privacy when necessary but an open feel in the midst of the dig environment. Lease agreements are month-to- month, providing young companies flexibility as they continue to grow. Amenities include a fully operational set up for tenants including Internet, telephone and print/copy services as well as access to the events and services offered by the Innovation Center.

The LEED-certified Innovation Center opened in 2010 with two tenants and is designed to accommodate small and mid-size companies seeking office, wet lab and/or research space, on a month-to-month basis or via longer-term leases. Owned and operated by BNMC Inc., the facility is designed as a “plug ‘n play” set-up whereby tenants enjoy a fully operational office setting without having to handle office and facilities issues such as phone, Internet and other services. The Innovation Center also includes the recently opened Learn at the Innovation Center, designed as classroom space for educational programs and dig, its co-work space. What:  The Buffalo Niagara Medical Center, Inc. (BNMC) will host an Internship Fair to connect area companies with undergraduate and graduate students for spring and summer internships. Nearly two dozen companies in varying fields, including life sciences, technology, business, marketing and more, will be on hand to meet with an estimated 100 local students for potential internship positions.

BUFFALO, N.Y., May 20, 2015 – Six companies have become the newest tenants at the Thomas R. Beecher, Jr. Innovation Center on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, bringing the total number of start-up and growing companies, as well as the businesses that provide services to them, to nearly 100. The new tenants include Buffalo Rising, Inc, Campagnolo Bonk PLLC, Pitch + Pivot LLC, theBREWROOM, The Synergy Group and Triple Track HR Partners.

Located at 640 Ellicott Street, the Innovation Center welcomed its new tenants on May 1st. Also joining the Innovation Center are Buffalo Rising, Inc., a website covering Buffalo’s positive and interesting news, with over 3 million annual visitors; Pitch + Pivot, a sales and marketing consulting firm; and The Synergy Group, a consulting firm specializing in work/life strategy development. New tenants also include Campagnolo Bonk PLLC, providing a comprehensive array of health care consulting, audit, operational and management services to health care providers; and Triple Track HR Partners, providing human resource consulting for businesses throughout Western New York.

According to Vic Nole, Director of Business Development for the BNMC Inc., “The Innovation Center continues to draw new tenants as small, start-up businesses and the companies that provide services to them realize the unique opportunities here for networking and collaboration. We are delighted to provide an entrepreneurial culture that can help young companies get off the ground and to encourage connections among our tenants that can help them gain insight, share experiences and, we hope, take advantage of each other’s product and service offerings. We find our tenants love the flexible workspace that the Innovation Center offers as their companies grow and their needs change.”

All of the companies will be located on the fourth floor in the Innovation Center Suites, and will have privileges to use dig, located on the first floor. Pitch+Pivot also added two additional dig memberships for their staff in addition to workspace at the Suites.

The LEED-certified Innovation Center opened in 2010 with two tenants and is designed to accommodate small and mid-size companies seeking office, wet lab and/or research space, on a month-to-month basis or via longer-term leases. Owned and operated by BNMC Inc., the facility is designed as a “plug ‘n play” set-up whereby tenants enjoy a fully operational office setting without having to handle office and facilities issues such as phone, Internet and other services. Tenants also have access to collaborative space, conference rooms, kitchen facilities and other amenities. The Innovation Center also serves as the physical location for Ignite, BNMC Inc.’s business development program, that actively identifies and evaluates new business opportunities, educates and provides mentorship to entrepreneurs, and creates, incubates, and grows new companies in Buffalo.

Workspace also available through BNMC Inc. includes dig coworking space, available to those who do not need full office amenities, and traditional leased office space at the Innovation Center and at 73 High Street on the Medical Campus.

BUFFALO, N.Y. November 24, 2014 — The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. (BNMC Inc.) announced today that it has formally launched Ignite, a full complement of resources designed to identify, evaluate, and support new business opportunities for the purpose of creating and incubating all types of new companies and jobs in the Buffalo region.

Ignite is a program for new business development that actively facilitates collaboration among researchers, inventors, industry leaders, investors, students, and services providers. It includes workspace, business services, mentoring, access to capital, programming, networking opportunities and collaboration to help entrepreneurs and innovators move ideas into businesses that can create jobs.

Ignite offers a continuum of resources to entrepreneurs at every stage of business development, including those who just have an idea for a business to those who are much farther along in the development and commercialization of a product, technology platform, or service. Ignite includes existing resources offered through BNMC Inc, including dig, a co-working space designed for those in the early stage of developing a business or idea, as well as office and laboratory space, mentoring and networking for emerging companies currently offered at BNMC properties including the Thomas R. Beecher, Jr. Innovation Center at 640 Ellicott Street, BNMC’s life sciences incubator at 73 High Street, and the Innovation Center Annex at 847 Main Street.

Services offered through Ignite include initial evaluation of business ideas, guidance on developing a business plan, education and mentoring on a variety of business design and launch strategies, connections to experts who can help move ideas to the next stage, and a full complement of networking events.

According to Vic Nole, BNMC Inc. Director of New Business Development, Ignite unites BNMC’s business development services under one unified identity and is one more step in fostering entrepreneurship, creativity and collaboration with the overall goal of creating more jobs in the region. “In addition to providing workspace, business services, and networking opportunities, we will be pro-active is identifying, evaluating, incubating and helping to grow start-up companies. We believe that cultivating this entrepreneurial eco-system will provide a culture of innovation and collaboration while providing the tools necessary to further develop ideas into viable businesses,” said Nole.

BNMC Inc. operates the Innovation Center, a LEED-certified research and development space housing early stage companies, as well as companies offering support services like access to capital, intellectual property attorneys, talent acquisition, accounting, sales, and marketing. Local Executives at BNMC’s Innovation Center Complete Incubator Management Certificate Program

Buffalo, NY— Vic Nole, Director of New Business Development, and Jennifer Flood, Suites Administrator, from the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc.’s (BNMC Inc.) Thomas R. Beecher Jr. Innovation Center recently completed the National Business Incubation Association’s (NBIA) Incubator Management Certificate Program.
The educational program provides a comprehensive and practical overview of the tasks and responsibilities of managing business incubators, which are programs that accelerate the successful development of start-up and emerging companies by providing entrepreneurs with resources and services. Launched in 2007, the certificate program is designed to enhance managers’ skills and to provide them with opportunities to gain ideas for building stronger relationships with key constituents, providing effective client services, ensuring incubator sustainability and more.

“I am proud to have earned the Incubator Management Certificate,” said Nole. “It certainly helps me to provide the best possible service to our client companies and to our local entrepreneurs who need assistance in launching their business ideas.  It also has allowed me to join a solid network of incubator managers across the country who share best practices and resources for the benefit of our local clients.”

NBIA officials say receiving a certificate is a mark of distinction verifying mastery of incubator governance, services and policies. “We thought it would be helpful for NBIA to establish a base of knowledge that every incubator manager should know, regardless of the type of incubator they run,” said Tom Strodtbeck, NBIA director of events and international programs. “The certificate program is a way for people to track their progress in gaining that knowledge.”

To receive a certificate, incubator managers must complete a total of 24 hours of training that covers a range of topics, including incubator finances, strategic planning, graduation policies and procedures, client selection, and facilities management.

Business incubation programs, such as the Thomas R. Beecher, Jr. Innovation Center, catalyze the process of starting and growing companies by providing entrepreneurs with the expertise, networks and tools they need to make their ventures successful. NBIA estimates that in 2011 alone, North American incubators assisted about 49,000 start-up companies that provided full-time employment for nearly 200,000 workers and generated annual revenue of almost $15 billion.

The Thomas R. Beecher, Jr. Innovation Center, located at 640 Ellicott Street on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, is a LEED-certified research and development space housing early stage companies, as well as companies offering support services like access to capital, IP attorneys, talent acquisition, sales, and marketing. The growing space is designed to accommodate small to medium companies seeking office space, wet lab and/or research space.

New Signage Adds to Improved Medical Campus Streetscape

Lighting, pathways, gardens and public art enhance public spaces

Buffalo, N.Y., October 7, 2014 – New, colorful directional signage is being installed on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, nearly completing significant streetscape enhancements to the Campus that began in 2010.  The wayfinding system, developed by Corbin Design, will have a cohesive look and will direct patients and visitors to the major campus destinations.

20141007_133516The 44 signature signs will be installed throughout the Campus, from Goodell to North Street and Main to Michigan. In addition, informational kiosks that include full campus maps and other information about the Medical Campus will be located at major pedestrian areas.

The signage is one more step in the improved look of the Campus that includes the completion of Ellicott Park, a $6.3 million federal streetscape project that extends along Ellicott Street from Goodell to Best Streets. Designed by nArchitects, the 3,300 linear park runs through the heart of the Medical Campus and includes angled paths, islands, and plazas, as well as banded concrete, illuminated benches, a diverse planting scheme, and signature LED lighting – the first of its kind in the city of Buffalo. Ellicott Park was developed with input from a variety of Medical Campus stakeholders and was designed to encourage purposeful interactions between employees, patients, visitors, and neighbors, increase active living opportunities, and provide better access to the Campus institutions.

In addition to input on design and development of streetscape improvements, Medical Campus stakeholders are also taking an active role in the ongoing upkeep of the surrounding areas.  The BNMC Inc. team has adopted specific garden beds in Ellicott Park and are actively weeding, cleaning and handling general maintenance to ensure that the beds look their best at all times. Other Medical Campus businesses and organizations are encouraged to adopt a bed in the linear park. Those that adopt a bed are supported by BNMC Inc. Green Team members and are recognized with signs in the adopted bed.

The investment in improving the overall streetscape on the Medical Campus creates a unique environment, while providing a safe and walkable public space. Many improvements are also energy efficient and environmentally friendly, such as the 21 electric vehicle charging stations throughout the campus and the LED lighting in the public right of way on Ellicott, as well as the installation of a bio-retention facility to filter contaminants that would otherwise enter the Great Lakes and adding solar/wind powered lighting in the parking lot across from the Innovation Center.  In addition, exterior public art has been added at the corner of High & Ellicott in partnership with the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation and on the MiGo parking garage at Michigan and High Street in partnership with a community art committee.

While the enhanced public spaces are designed primarily for employees, patients and their visitors, BNMC, Inc. actively encourages the public to visit the Medical Campus as well.  Initiatives such as “Tunes in the Tent,” musical events held every Tuesday at noon at Ellicott Park over the summer, and the “Walking on Wednesdays” program that provides walking tours through the Medical Campus are open to the public.  Learn more about the BNMC at bnmc-old.local.

The Buffalo News: National foundations investing in Buffalo

The cooperation and recent track record of Buffalo’s economic development efforts has caught the eye of an unlikely source of investment capital: national charitable foundations.

Lured to the city by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, executives from several deep-pocketed nonprofits want to put their vast dollars to work in one of the nation’s most downtrodden cities as it undergoes what many see as a revival.

They say they are intrigued by the new sense of public and private-sector teamwork in the region, and are considering targeted investments in key projects to improve the economy and quality of life. The goal is to create conditions that encourage the growth of small businesses and jobs, so individuals and families can earn more money and accumulate wealth.

The foundations are eying the components of the regional economic development plan – such as technology manufacturing and medical research – as the mechanism to do it.

“We are very impressed with the cooperation and the intergovernmental and public-private partnerships that have already been developed in Buffalo and the surrounding area,” said Frank Altman, founder, president and CEO of the Community Reinvestment Fund (CRF), one of the national groups. “We just think there is a real opportunity to get behind that.”

The foundations want to invest from their core holdings in projects, businesses and initiatives, hoping to make a greater impact on the community. Projects may include building new and improved housing, fostering the creation of new jobs, training workers, supporting new businesses, and encouraging environmental and social initiatives.

Representatives of eight national foundations and three national investment firms gathered in Buffalo for a daylong summit in June with 50 attendees in all, and officials hope to build on that in the fall.

Specific opportunities that the Community Foundation is pitching include:

• Training programs for jobs that pay “family-sustaining” wages

• Investing in businesses in “economically distressed communities”

• Buying government bonds

• Investing in companies with “strong environmental records”

• Offering credit to a local land trust to buy land for preservation

• Buying and developing commercial or mixed-use properties in specific areas

Investors were particularly interested in the new Advanced Manufacturing Institute and companies participating in the 43North business plan competition, according to Community Foundation.

The foundations expect to earn enough on their investments to sustain their holdings.

“We’re a community that’s really on the move in terms of economic development, and these investors are coming to town to meet with local economic development leaders to begin the conversation of opportunities where they can put capital to work in the local community,” said Clotilde Perez-Bode Dedecker, president and CEO of the Community Foundation, which is spearheading the effort and coordinating the partners along with the F.B. Heron Foundation.

“It’s clearly about economic development, but it’s not about grants,” she said. “These foundations are coming in to look for opportunities in which they can invest their actual endowment.”

That would bring significantly more outside dollars into the community to leverage local money. And it could add to the national attention that Buffalo is gaining from the state’s Buffalo Billion economic development initiative, the growth of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and the University at Buffalo, and the surge in development.

“The word is getting out about Buffalo as an up-and-coming city and this is validation of that,” said Dottie Gallagher-Cohen, CEO of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership. “What I see with this is tremendous horsepower in capital.”

Broader focus

“Mission-related” or “impact” investing is a change for philanthropic organizations long focused on social, environmental and economic change through grants and donations. Philanthropic leaders have concluded that the challenges facing many communities and families are so serious they have to shift gears to make more of an impact.

“Poverty is not marginal anymore. It’s not if we help someone get access to a loan, they can buy a house. If they don’t have a job, having access to a loan is not good, and owning a house is not always good, either,” said Clara Miller, president of the $300 million F.B. Heron Foundation in New York, which seeks to address poverty and related issues through socially responsible investments.

“So we said maybe we should go farther down the food chain and say how can we intervene to make sure people have jobs,” she said.

Nonprofit charitable foundations are required by the Internal Revenue Service to spend at least 5 percent of their total return each year. Heron, for example, has provided a $1.5 million grant to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

“BNMC offers one of the most tangible and inclusive expressions of successful economic development and job creation in an ex-industrialized American city,” Heron says on its website. “Anchor institutions, the historically low income surrounding neighborhoods, and community groups are all at the table.”

The newer concept calls for charitable organizations to invest their core endowment directly in communities, seeking investments that will generate social or environmental benefits, and still provide market-rate or near-market-rate returns. That could include support for job-training or job-creation initiatives, funding a “green” economy, small business financing or loan guarantees, private-equity stakes in companies, or investments in stock, bonds or even commercial and residential real estate development.

“This is very new to our community, this whole concept,” Dedecker said. “It’s a powerful opportunity for our community at this time.”

Besides Community Foundation, Heron of New York City and Minneapolis-based CRF, participants include Florida-based Community Capital Management, New York-based National Development Council, EKO, Hitachi Foundation of Washington, D.C., the Kresge Foundation of Detroit and George Soros’ Open Society Foundation of New York. Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation and New Island Capital have also been contacted.

The organizations have engaged in similar work in cities across the country, including Chicago, Boston and Cleveland, and their focus ranges from jobs and business development to the environment and housing.

For example, besides grants, Heron also has issued loans, bought debt or made private-equity investments in businesses and communities through funds in California, the San Francisco Bay Area, northwest Louisiana, Boston, New Hampshire and the Appalachian region. Another nonprofit that is not involved here, the Minneapolis Foundation, provided a $1 million working capital loan fund through another nonprofit to enable minority- and women-owned businesses to participate in the construction of a new football stadium for the Vikings.

“The for-profit sector looks for places that are already on the way up and make a lot of money from doing that. The philanthropic sector has a different model,” said Mark Popovich, vice president of programs at Hitachi Foundation, which focuses on quality job creation and career advancement, particularly in health care and advanced manufacturing, and on entrepreneurship. “We’re looking at places that aren’t the most vibrant economic communities, because that’s where the opportunities exist to invest with local investors to support change.”

The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. (BNMC, Inc.) is now accepting wp-contentlications for its Seed Capital Accelerator Program, sponsored by First Niagara Bank. First Niagara has provided funding that will be used by BNMC, Inc. to support new and existing start-ups that are affiliated with BNMC, Inc.’s Innovation Center or entrepreneurship programs.

The new fund will provide up to $10,000 in seed funding to enable start-ups to overcome short term business obstacles, and to reach project milestones that are designed to get products and services to market quicker – thus yielding measurable longer term returns on investment. Grants and loans will be awarded to businesses that have sustainable growth potential, a legitimate funding need, and are making a contribution to the social and business communities on and around the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

BNMC, Inc. will make available grants or loans to eligible business owners under the program for the following purposes:

  • To purchase equipment or other capital goods.
  • For operating expenses that are directly related to a specific revenue generating project.
  • To acquire inventory required to satisfy a signed purchase order.
  • To pay up to 50% of a new hire’s salary for up to 90 days.
  • To pay for education, mentoring, or training for entrepreneurs and business owners that is directly related to the creation of a new business or the growth of an existing business within the Community.

The Program will be directed to companies that are located on the Medical Campus, or to companies (or entrepreneurs) that are being assisted with their formation and growth plans by the business development office at the BNMC, Inc. Specifically, awards will be provided to either:

  1. Revenue generating companies that sell goods and services,
  2. Community building companies that provide goods or services to persons on or near the Medical Campus, or
  3. Companies that need capital to deliver on projects for BNMC member institutions.

Four Neighborhoods, One Community

The BNMC is working with the Greater Buffalo Niagara Regional Transportation Council on a study that will identify major streets that could be upgraded through traffic-calming measures, in order to better connect the Medical Campus with surrounding communities and Downtown Buffalo.
We would like your input on which streets need to become more pedestrian, bicyclist, transit-rider and driver friendly, and how these goals can be accomplished!

Please join us at the next Four Neighborhoods, One Community meeting on Wednesday, April 23, 5:00-7:00 pm (light refreshments at 5pm, meeting starts promptly at 5:30 pm) at the Innovation Center, 640 Ellicott St, for a discussion on Transportation in and around the Medical Campus.

In addition to the transportation study, we will be sharing updates on the new GO Zone Bicycle Workshop, located at Carlton and Washington Streets, as well as the exciting events planned for Bike to Work Month in May.

d!g Buffalo to Open on March 24th

BidVYx7IMAINbwpThe wait is over! d!g buffalo is opening its doors (officially) on Monday, March 24th! The new co-working space, located in the Thomas R. Beecher, Jr. Innovation Center at 640 Ellicott Street, is designed for those in the early stages of developing a business or an idea. d!g, which stands for design innovation garage, will represent a range of creative, mechanical, and operational industries, driving the creation of new possibilities, new collaborations, and new partnerships. Part of our mission at the BNMC, Inc. is to support entrepreneurs and help grow businesses to create jobs. For us, d!g is more than a space, it’s a community of changemakers.
Our new digs were designed by faculty of the Department of Architecture and undergraduate and graduate students from the Situated Technologies Research Group: Prof. Omar Khan, Prof. Laura Garofalo, Michael Kirschner, John Geisler, Kathryn Hobert, Philip Gusmano, Joseph Swerdlin and Nicole Halstead. Omar Khan, Associate Professor and Chair of the department of architecture at the University at Buffalo, was one of the original visionaries for d!g. For Omar, it was somewhat personal as he had seen too many of his talented students lured away to other cities by a creative vibe and culture –he wanted a way to keep those students in Buffalo.

photo 3 (2)So why d!g? d!g will have mentors on hand during the day to help our innovators working on various projects. Plus, d!g will also have a Curator on staff to help facilitate networking among innovators and develop programming for the space. We’ll have networking and programming events to encourage conversations among our innovators and experts. d!g is an affordable option for entrepreneurs currently working at home, start-up companies looking to be a part of a larger community, families of patients looking for a place to work while visiting loved ones at the hospitals on the Medical Campus, a site for satellite offices – anyone looking for an environment to help foster productivity and success. We’d also like to add that d!g, which is located on a former loading dock in the renovated Trico Products Corp., building, complete with a glass garage door overlooking the Medical Campus, is a really, really cool space. Really.

#Construction on the BNMC

There’s no shortage of things hwp-contentening on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus today – from cranes hard at work on Conventus and Roswell Park to improved streetscapes and a new co-working space – everywhere you look something is hwp-contentening on the 6.5 million square feet of existing clinical, research, and support space. There is currently two million square feet under or soon-to-be under construction on the Campus, equaling an investment of more than $750 million in private and public funding. View the BNMC Map.

  • Conventus (medical office, research, and clinical care facility), anchor tenants include Kaleida Health’s Ambulatory Surgery Center & UBMD, as well as private-sector companies AMRI and Perkin Elmer , opening in Spring 2015.

Business Development is Buzzing on the BNMC

Ideas are being tested, perfected, and implemented every day here on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. Innovators and entrepreneurs from all over the world are choosing to be in the heart of Buffalo, advancing products and technologies here at the Medical Campus. The BNMC continues to grow, creating an environment where a variety of life sciences, biotech, energy, and related support companies can interact with world class researchers and product developers.
We can help with all stages of company development, from “ideation” in our brand new co-work space called “d!g”, a collaborative space with mentors to help take your idea to the next level, to “incubation” in the Innovation Center, a mixed use space with nearly 60 companies that includes wet labs, offices, conference rooms, and light manufacturing bays. We also have plans to bring a new business accelerator online in the next few months. Our director of business development, Vic Nole can help you determine what space would be most wp-contentropriate for your company, and help you to connect to valuable business services and resources.

One of our goals at the BNMC is to help promote “purposeful collisions.” This includes encouraging researchers, physicians, administrators, nurses, business people, and community members to connect and interact through the projects designed to enhance our buildings, streetscapes, workforce, and social environment. More than 200 People Come to Hear About 43North Business Competition in dig

photo 3 (2)This past Tuesday, more than 200 people came out to learn about 43North, a business competition targeted at attracting the attention of entrepreneurs eager to win some of the $5 million up for grabs with the winner receiving $1 million. The presentation was led by Andrew Pulkrabek executive director of 43North. The initiative is part of New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s historic pledge of $1 billion in state funding to ignite economic growth in the Buffalo, New York region. The event also included a sneak peak of dig, a co-working space in the Thomas R. Beecher, Jr. Innovation Center at 640 Ellicott Street.

Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus To Open Coworking Space

dig Designed as Part of  BNMC’s Progression of Resources to Support Local Entrepreneurs 

(BUFFALO – September 24, 2013) The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. announced today that it is opening a new coworking space in the Thomas R. Beecher, Jr. Innovation Center at 640 Ellicott Street. Dubbed dig, it is yet another step in fostering entrepreneurship, creativity and collaboration. The space is designed for those in the early stages of developing a business or an idea.

dig stands for design innovation garage, a play on both the location – a former loading dock in the renovated Trico Products Corp., building, complete with a glass garage door overlooking the Medical Campus – and also on the move toward a more design-centric entrepreneurial culture.  This co-working community will represent a range of creative, technical, and operational industries, driving the creation of new possibilities, new collaborations, and new partnerships.

“dig complements the highly successful Innovation Center that provides office space and amenities for growing companies. Opening dig ties directly to the Governor’s vision of supporting entrepreneurial culture across the state,” said Matthew K. Enstice, president & chief executive officer of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. “dig will offer critical pieces needed by those with a young idea or business – work space, support, mentoring, and collaboration to get their business off the ground, creating more jobs and spurring the economy in our region.”

“One of our goals at the BNMC is to build a community of changemakers. We believe that hwp-contentens through collaboration and innovation, and what better way to do that than creating a co-working space for people who work on the Medical Campus or those who want to be a part of what’s hwp-contentening here,” said Patrick J. Whalen, chief operating officer of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. “dig will not only be a space to work from, but also a hub of information to help cultivate this community – hosting networking events, seminars, and community activities. “

Omar Khan, associate professor and chair of the University at Buffalo’s Department of Architecture, was integral in the conception and design of dig.

“I have been at a loss as to how to keep some of my best students around Buffalo after graduation,” said Khan. “Most are drawn to other cities that give them the creative vibe they cherish. To me, Buffalo is full of creative people but it lacks exciting workspaces where they can mingle and share ideas. dig provides such an alternative workspace that is visually exciting and socially dynamic. It is the type of design environment where young and old can collaborate on innovative solutions to globally pressing problems.”

The design team that created dig consists of faculty from the Department of Architecture and undergraduate and graduate students from the Situated Technologies Research Group: Prof. Omar Khan, Prof. Laura Garofalo, Michael Kirschner, John Geisler, Kathryn Hobert, Philip Gusmano, Joseph Swerdlin and Nicole Halstead.

dig will have “entrepreneurs-in-residence” on hand during the day to help members working on various projects, as well as a dig Curator on staff to help facilitate networking among members and develop programming for the space. dig members will be “announced” when they arrive on a large screen with details about what they are working on and/or their expertise to encourage networking. The space will be outfitted with large tables and chairs, lounge-type seating with couches and chairs, space for private calls and meetings, lockers and mailboxes, and a café.

There will be an wp-contentlication process to join the co-work space. Anyone is eligible to wp-contently, although membership preference will be given to those working toward social innovation. The introductory rates will range from a daily rate of $15 to all-access monthly rates of $100.

“We view this as an affordable option for entrepreneurs currently working at home, start-up companies looking to be a part of a larger community, families of patients looking for a place to work while visiting loved ones at the hospitals on the Medical Campus, a site for satellite offices – anyone looking for an environment to help foster productivity and success,” adds Whalen.

“We are excited to help in the development of dig, not only as the hip place to be for co-working, but also the place where collaboration and shared resources lead to greater creative problem-solving,” said Rob Wynne, executive creative director of Wynne Creative Group, and tenant in the Innovation Center. “Plus it resides in the city’s hot spot for innovation – the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. The area is ripe for this kind of workspace model.”

“We’re sharing cars and bikes, so it was only a matter of time before we shared space, and the Medical Campus is a perfect place to do it,” according to Creighton Randall, executive director of Buffalo CarShare.

dig members will receive complimentary memberships for CarShare and BikeShare in partnership with GO BNMC, the medical campus’ initiative to make it easier for employees to choose alternatives to driving alone.

The primary membership benefit is unlimited access to really innovative people. Members receive varying amenities depending on their level, ranging from high speed wifi and color copiers, to access to the Innovation Center’s fitness center, to conference room space and free coffee.

The Innovation Center is already home to 43 companies, ranging in size from one to 50 employees.
