BNMC Becomes a Tobacco-Free Zone

As the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus continues to promote healthy lifestyles and sustainable environments, on July 4 the Medical Campus will officially be declared a tobacco-free zone across its 120 acre footprint which spans from Goodell Street to North Street and east-west from Michigan Avenue to Main Street. The tobacco-free adoption wp-contentlies to all of the BNMC’s employees, visitors, patients, vendors, contractors and will not be permitted on any of the BNMC properties.
Many of the member institutions such as the Buffalo Medical Group, Kaleida Health, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and the University at Buffalo have already declared that their sites are tobacco-free zones. Working with the Erie-Niagara Tobacco-Free Coalition, BNMC created a tobacco-free plan that included data from campus employees about their receptiveness for creating a tobacco-free campus. There was a great deal of support from many of the employees who took the survey since a major reason mentioned for choosing to work at one of the medical and research institutions was to help create healthier environments.

This adoption will affect more than 1 million patients and visitors, as well as the 12,000 employees and students. Secondhand smoke is a dangerous contributor to tobacco-related health issues. Residents that live near the BNMC will be influenced by this change as well, ceasing the litter that builds up on neighboring properties. To continue to show dedication to becoming a good neighbor promoting healthy communities, a detailed implementation strategy will be established in order to promote and enforce the initiative.

For information about tobacco cessation resources, please visit the NYS Department of Health Tobacco Control Program and the Erie-Niagara Tobacco-Free Coalition websites.

National Grid and BNMC Help City Honors to Beautify Fruit Belt Neighborhood with Community Garden

In efforts to transform vacant lots next to City Honors School in the Fruit Belt neighborhood, City Honors students have decided to turn one lot in particular into a community garden.  Last October the foundation for the garden was laid. The students named it the Pelion Community Garden, after the Greek mythology homeland of the school’s mascot, Chiron the Centaur.
In June, many of the City Honors students, National Grid, Groundwork Buffalo, and Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus volunteers will go back to polish up the garden while cleaning up the surrounding area.

EE Global Forum Honors Energy Efficiency ‘Visionaries’

From Australia, Germany, United Arab Emirates, United States

Orlando, March 29, 2012 – Four cities on four continents will be honored as exemplars of energy efficiency leadership by the Alliance to Save Energy and the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance at the EE Global Forum during an awards luncheon at the Peabody Resort here today.

Selected by the 50+ member EE Global International Steering Committee (ISC) chaired by U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Schneider Electric U.S. President Jeff Drees, 2012 EE Visionary Award  recipients Buffalo, N.Y.; Masdar City, United Arab Emirates; Melbourne, Australia; and Tuebingen, Germany are models for municipalities around the world that seek to use energy efficiency to cut energy consumption and save money.

In addition to the award ceremony, the luncheon/plenary session (12:45-2:30 pm) will be addressed by Siemens Industry Inc. Vice President and Senior Advisor Bob Dixon in recognition of the company’s sponsorship of EE Global’s closing event.

“The EE Global Visionary Awards celebrate and showcase the people and places responsible for cutting-edge energy efficiency achievements that are leading the way in today’s global economy,” commented Alliance President Kateri Callahan. “We congratulate the winners for their outstanding contributions to the global advancement of energy efficiency – a key mission of the Alliance to Save Energy and of EE Global itself.”

Buffalo, N.Y., and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus Inc. – a growing medical and life science campus – are receiving the Americas award for creating a five-year Energy Innovation and economic development plan for the campus and surrounding residential community that integrates energy efficiency, grid modernization, alternative transportation and renewable energy. Cognizant of the medical campus’s impact on the city, campus officials worked with nearby residents, National Grid and campus institutions including Kaleida Health, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the University at Buffalo and the Global Energy Institute to create an impressive path toward energy efficiency. Medical Campus CEO Matthew Enstice will accept the award.

Masdar City, United Arab Emirates (UAE), representing the Africa-Middle East region, is a low-carbon, low-energy and low-waste suburb emerging in Abu Dhabi to house over 40,000 residents and hundreds of businesses. As a test bed for innovation, Masdar City adheres to rigorous sustainability principles in every aspect of its urban planning and architectural design. Masdar uses Smart Grid and energy efficiency technologies to continually optimize and reduce energy usage. This living and working community achieved a 51% reduction in electricity consumption, 54% reduction in water consumption and 50% reduction in cooling needs compared to average consumption across the UAE. The city’s source for innovation is Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, a top-class research university with a reputation for being at the forefront of clean technology development. Masdar Director of Sustainability Dr. Nawal Al-Hosany will accept the award.

The Asia-Pacific region winner is Melbourne, Australia, whose 1200 Buildings

initiative is seeking to boost energy efficiency in the city’s commercial buildings sector. It has sparked significant interest in Melbourne, with more than 200 buildings at varying stages in their retrofits. City of Melbourne and its partners developed a unique financial mechanism, which has been legislated by the Victorian Government. It provides property-secured financing, reducing the risk for financial institutions while giving owners access to capital. It also avoids split incentives between owners and tenants by allowing tenants to contribute to the cost of the efficiency upgrades and enjoy lower energy costs. The initiative is expected to result in up to $2 billion in private-sector investment, about 8,000 new jobs, a five-million-liter cut in potable water use and a 383,000-metric-ton cut in greenhouse gas emissions. Director Government Liaison, Victorian Government Americas Office, Libby Ferguson will accept the award on behalf of Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle.

This year’s European winner is the city of Tuebingen, Germany, whose absolute and per capita energy consumption decreased by 7% and 12%, respectively, between 2004 and 2009 – even as the city’s population grew by 5.3%. Spearheading much of the Tuebingen effort is Green Party Lord Mayor Boris Palmer, who will accept the award on his city’s behalf. A variety of community-based projects there – including a local energy conservation campaign called Tuebingen goes blue which transformed the city’s transportation system to include hybrid, electric and hydrogen buses – is one of the community-based projects that spark energy efficiency.

D’Youville Opens Classroom Facility at Medical Campus Innovation Center

D’YOUVILLE OPENS CLASSROOM FACILITY AT MEDICAL CAMPUS INNOVATION CENTER

Buffalo, March 26, 2012 –  D’Youville College is joining the mix of tenants in the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus Innovation Center in the former Trico Building at 640 Ellicott Street.

The college has leased wp-contentroximately 1600 square feet of space in the Center that has been renovated into state of the art facilities including a classroom and offices.

Called the D’Youville Center for Professional Studies, the private college is the first college or university in the research and development faculty.

The college facility ties in with D’Youville’s new Professional Development Program designed for working professionals who want to upgrade their education and training, acquire current skills and knowledge to keep pace with rapidly changing development in their field.

D’Youville will initially offer Professional Upgrade Courses in occupational therapy and dietetics for health care professionals in April with evening classes for registered nurses seeking bachelor’s degrees in nursing scheduled for this fall.

Continuing Education Courses in Certified Public Accounting and leadership are also in the works along with a variety of other programs to be offered in the Center in 2012-13.

“the Medical Campus is the hub of health care activity and D’Youville is one of the leaders in this type of education so our presence is important,” says Dr. Arup Sen, vice president for academic affairs at the college.

“We want to reach out to the community and make it convenient for individuals to take advantage of our educational opportunities,” Dr. Sen added.

Students and faculty will also be close to a number of life sciences and biotechnology startup companies that offer collaboration and internships.

D’Youville is already working with Advantage Home Telehealth Inc. on grants and internships, and with ServSafe, a food training and certification company for food handlers at all levels in the food industry, both located in the Center, according to Dr. Sen.  “Our presence in the Center opens new avenues for our students.”

D’Youville has long been a leader in health care education offering a wide array of programs, the most recent being pharmacy and chiropractic.

There will be an Open House at the new Center for Professional Studies in the Innovation Center in late April.

This is the second satellite campus D’Youville has established.  In October, it opened a facility at Brothers of Mercy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clarence for registered nurses wanting a bachelor’s degree.

Continue reading “Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Installed Across Campus”

Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations FAQs

The energizeBNMC partnership between National Grid and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) is designed to transform the Medical Campus into a global leader in energy innovation. As a part of energizeBNMC, BNMC has partnered with AAA of Western and Central New York, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), Clean Communities of Western New York, the Global Energy Institute, and the US Department of Energy (DOE) to initiate the effort to become a leader in New York State electric transportation.
There are currently 21 EV stations installed throughout the BNMC. The goal of this project is to lower vehicle emissions into the environment and the overall operating costs that come with petroleum-based vehicles, offering alternative transportation fuels like electricity and natural gas.

Below are some facts that will answer common questions in regards to the EV charging stations:

What prompted the installation of the cutting-edge EV charging stations?

A major focus for the BNMC institutions right now is planning for our short-term and long-term growth, in particular our transportation and energy needs across the campus. As it is rapidly growing, the BNMC is dedicated to creating a sustainable campus for the future.  The EV charging station installations are a part of the vision to create a sustainable Medical Campus that is environment-friendly.

Where did the funding for this project come from?

With a grant of $150,000 awarded by Clean Communities/DOE/NYSERDA, the BNMC and AAA of Western and Central NY were able to complete this $300,000 project to implement the installation of the EV charging stations.

Where can the Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (240-volt GE DuraStations) be found throughout the BNMC?

The EV charging stations can be found at the following locations (See Virtual Tour for visual locations):

589 Ellicott Street Parking Lot.

880 Ellicott Street Parking Garage at Ellicott and Goodrich Streets.

134 High Street Parking Garage – This employee-only garage will open at the end of March.

-Ellicott Street right of way, near 589 Ellicott Street Parking Lot – these will be operational when the street goes two-way as part of the ongoing streetscape project.

Do I have to pay to charge my vehicle in one of the garages or parking lots?

If you work on the BNMC and have a parking pass for one of the BNMC-managed lots, you can charge at no cost. If you are a visitor to the Medical Campus, talk to the attendant at either the 589 Ellicott Street lot or the Ellicott Goodrich Garage if this is not your primary parking destination. Currently, the use of the EV charging stations is being provided at no cost to patients, visitors, and members of the community. Parking fees are charged at the daily rate.

Is charging availability on a first-come, first-serve basis?

Yes, this is currently hwp-contentening on a first-come, first-serve basis. As demand grows, we will adapt this strategy.

How long will I be able to leave my vehicle charging in a parking lot or garage on the BNMC?

As long as you are parked there. Parking hours and rates vary across the BNMC.

Are there other EV charging stations in WNY?

AAA of Western and Central New York has installed EV charging stations at 2 of its AAA Car Care Plus locations, one at 8120 Main Street in Clarence (716.932.3900), and the other at 2131 Eggert Road in Amherst (716.362.0562). For more information on how to access their EV charging stations, contact each location.

Will I be able to leave my vehicle charging at one of the EV charging stations located along the right of way on Ellicott Street near the Innovation Center without getting a parking ticket?

No. As stated above, these chargers were installed knowing that Ellicott Street will go two-way at the completion of the federal streetscape project. Until then, these chargers are not to be used. Please pull into the parking lot at 589 Ellicott Street and access those chargers.

(BNMC) and its partners unveiled 21 electric vehicle charging stations installed across the Medical Campus and two at AAA facilities in Amherst.  This project is a joint effort between BNMC, AAA Western and Central New York, National Grid, Clean Communities of Western NY, NYSERDA, the Global Energy institute, and the US Department of Energy.

“A major focus for the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus institutions right now is planning for the future growth of this campus, in particular taking into account our short- and long-term transportation and energy needs to accommodate the large-scale growth we are anticipating over the next decade. We were thrilled to be able to partner with AAA and NYSERDA on this important project, as part of our ongoing initiative energize BNMC (building new model communities),” said Matthew K. Enstice, President, Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc.

The AAA and BNMC partnership were awarded and successfully implemented a $300,000 project with a $150,000 grant awarded by the DOE/NYSERDA for the turnkey installation of 21 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (240-volt GE DuraStations) throughout the Campus parking areas, including the parking lot at 589 Ellicott Street, the garage at Ellicott & Goodrich, the garage currently under construction at 134 High Street, and in the right of way along Ellicott Street.

“The rapidly growing BNMC continues to set the global standard as an efficient, modern, high quality Medical Campus that integrates vital scientific initiatives that meet health care needs,” said Mayor Byron W. Brown. “With charging stations on campus, we hope more organizations follow suit to increase energy efficiency in Buffalo, and protect our environment.”

In addition, AAA has installed EV Chargers at its two AAA Car Care Plus locations – 8120 Main Street in Clarence and 2131 Eggert Road in Amherst (near Niagara Falls Boulevard).

“AAA is pleased to be a part of this initiative and on the cutting edge of automotive technology that positions us to serve the ever-changing needs of our AAA members,” said Tom Chestnut, President/CEO of AAA Western and Central New York.  “We thank the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, NYSERDA, and Clean Cities for the opportunity to be on board with electric vehicle charging stations at our AAA Car Care Plus locations in Amherst and Clarence for all motorists to access.”

Barry Carr and Bill Pauly, representing the U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Cities Program proclaimed, “This is a wonderful boost to Western New York as these charging stations will allow our citizens to take advantage of the latest all electric and plug in hybrid vehicles.  Use of these vehicles will significantly lower vehicle emissions and provide Western New York residents with the opportunity to charge their vehicles while away from home.  We wp-contentreciate the leadership taken by BNMC, AAA, and National Grid in wp-contentlying for this Recovery Act Funding to create commerce here in Western New York”.

Focused on a wide array of public and retail destination stations, Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) has been deployed throughout New York State in an effort to reduce dependence on petroleum-based fuels.  All major vehicle manufacturers are now selling all electric or plug in hybrid vehicles that can dramatically lower operating cost and emissions.  The 23 EVSEs unveiled today, a first of its magnitude for the Greater Western New York region, will be followed by units located at local and super regional shopping centers and malls, open area lots, covered garages, parks, neighborhoods, and municipal and business offices.

“Across New York State, federal stimulus funds are helping to build a transportation system that emits fewer harmful emissions and is less dependent on imported petroleum,” said Linda Hardie, Project Manager at NYSERDA.  “This project represents a key step in making Buffalo and all of New York State a leader in electric transportation.  NYSERDA commends BNMC, AAA, National Grid, and Clean Cities for the vision and commitment they have shown in bringing this project to fruition.”

“Electric vehicles offer our society a path for a fundamental change in moving our transportation systems away from being oil dependent towards increased electrification.  Electrification of the transportation sector means significant flexibility in using a diversified portfolio of energy sources, which may include clean and renewable sources.  And this in turn may drive down transportation costs, improve our climate due to less pollution, and in general make our economy stronger,” said Dr. Alex Domijan, James Clerk Maxwell Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the Power Center for Utility Explorations at the University at Buffalo, and President and CEO of the Global Energy Institute at the BNMC.  “We are excited to lead this effort at BNMC and find ways in which we can make EV’s part of our everyday lives. The experimental studies we will conduct will include use patterns, charging and storage techniques, and many more related efforts to benefit our community as the BNMC urban platform is ideal for considerations in setting an example for other communities nationally to emulate.”

“National Grid and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus recently launched Energize BNMC, a historic partnership designed to transform the campus into a global leader in energy innovation and the installation of the electric vehicle charging stations throughout the campus is a perfect complement to fulfilling the vision of this partnership,” said Dennis Elsenbeck, Director of Community & Customer Management for National Grid in Buffalo. “National Grid supports the development and utilization of alternative transportation fuels like electricity and natural gas. These fuels are clean, economical and domestic, and their adoption will help strengthen the economy and protect the environment.  As part of our partnership with the BNMC we are striving to develop new solutions and cutting edge wp-contentroaches on everything from energy efficiency to renewable energy to smart technologies and what better way for the campus to build on this vision than making the campus electric car friendly through the efforts of NYSERDA , and the US Department of Energy.”

“We are excited and proud to see the GE DuraStation become a central component of Buffalo Niagara’s clean, green environment,” said Gary Arnott, General Manager of sales and global distribution for GE Energy Industrial Solutions.  “By positioning chargers across the campus, the BNMC now offers a leading example of the importance of a viable, sustainable EV infrastructure.”

National Grid and Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus Form Unique Energy Partnership to Transform Campus and Surrounding Neighborhoods into a Global Leader in Energy Innovation

  • Medical campus expected to grow to 12,000 employees, with increased energy needs.  Partnership will help manage usage through new technologies, training.

  • Retrofit of century-old home will demonstrate compatibility of modern energy use with preservation of historic structures.

  • Community stakeholders to be engaged in project development.

Buffalo, NY – National Grid and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) have formed a historic innovative energy partnership that will support economic development and growth in the greater Buffalo Niagara region.  The partnership – called “energize BNMC” – is part of the National Grid “e-zone” strategy to engage community stakeholders in integrated energy initiatives that meet local needs.

The partnership, which will transform the BNMC into a global benchmark for energy innovation, was announced today as the partners unveiled the first initiative – the National Grid Model Energy Home.  The BNMC-owned house, currently a vacant property located at 941-945 Washington Street on the campus, will be retrofitted into a one-of-kind model energy home to showcase cutting edge energy innovations, and will be open to the public and available for educational experiences of all levels.

National Grid and Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus Form Unique Energy Partnership

The partnership’s vision statement, developed through a collaborative and community wp-contentroach with all the project stakeholders, states, “The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and National Grid partnership will define and implement the global standard for an efficient, modern, high-quality, and customer-driven energy platform. National Grid will provide a world class customer experience while enabling BNMC’s plans for economic growth and innovation both on the campus and in the broader Buffalo-Niagara region.”

The rapid growth of the medical campus, combined with plans for continued redevelopment of surrounding neighborhoods, is a key driver behind the need for innovative wp-contentroaches to energy delivery and use on the campus and in surrounding neighborhoods.   Following several years of background discussion and research, National Grid and the BNMC in April formally began discussing an innovative wp-contentroach to energy for the entire campus and its immediate neighbors.  The partners will address and provide solutions to energy issues within the footprint of the newly formed partnership, with goals of improving energy efficiency on and around the campus, modernizing the energy platform to enable better energy data visibility as well as new technologies such as electric vehicles and renewable energy, and driving overall innovation and learning.

“National Grid recognizes that customers need new solutions and new wp-contentroaches, on everything from energy efficiency to renewable energy to smart technologies,” said Jim Madej, company senior vice president and chief customer officer.  “We are partnering with communities to develop and introduce innovative solutions that will meet not only their needs today, but will support their growth into the future.”

Steady growth on the BNMC presents unique challenges and opportunities for the partnership that will encompass capacity requirements, pricing, diverse energy delivery specifications, reliability, transportation-related energy needs, and modern energy management. The partners are planning a community-based wp-contentroach to energy efficiency and innovation, including technical implementation of integrated efficiency solutions on campus along with initiatives centered around engaging more than 8,500 employees campus-wide, a number that will increase to nearly 12,000 by the end of 2012, and the more than 7,000 residents in the surrounding neighborhoods to think about energy savings in a new way.  As part of this effort, National Grid and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus will work with a range of partners from the private and public sectors.

National Grid and Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus Form Unique Energy Partnership

Matt Enstice of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus stated, “National Grid has been instrumental in helping to identify new solutions that will meet our aggressive goals for growth and innovation on the medial campus and surrounding neighborhoods.  We wp-contentreciate National Grid’s leadership to recognize the importance of energy efficiency, renewable energy, smart technologies, electric vehicles, and other emerging technologies and wp-contentroaches and to partner with us on these critical issues we face.”

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown added, “We are proud to support National Grid and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus in their innovative energy partnership and we look forward to working with them on future endeavors. These advances in modern energy management will help drive growth not only on and around the Campus, but throughout the Buffalo Niagara region.  This partnership will also help revitalize our energy leadership in the City of Light.”

The National Grid Model Energy Home represents one initiative that this new partnership will undertake.  The partners will renovate and retrofit the two-story, brick structure to demonstrate modern, state-of-the-art energy usage and efficiency techniques and showcase new energy innovations.  The age of the structure, which was constructed in 1915 as two separate homes and later joined and renovated for use as medical offices, will help illustrate the ability to use the latest technologies in a preservation setting.

The structure, which is just over 6,000 square feet, provides significant space for the variety of modern home energy installations and displays planned for the project, and will be fully accessible for those with disabilities.

“Buffalo and the Western New York region have a rich energy history, going back to the earliest development of power from Niagara Falls, some of the first electric streetlights right near here in Buffalo, and tied to some of the great names in early energy development like Tesla, Edison and Westinghouse,” Madej said.  “This backdrop provides extra significance to the National Grid Model Energy Home. The aim is to provide members of this region with a sense of pride in the origins and legacy of the first electricity grid established in the area, and how it has contributed to modern-day society.”

The new partnership will develop holistic initiatives and programs that will address transportation, alternative energy, cost-cutting energy efficiency and grid modernization. National Grid and BNMC continue to work very closely with the BNMC member institutions, including Kaleida Health, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the University at Buffalo, the Global Energy Institute, nearby neighborhood residents and business owners, policy makers, and other community members.

National Grid and Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus Form Unique Energy Partnership

“We are excited to make modern energy systems a part of the fabric of our community,” said Enstice.

“With so much of our past steeped in the history of electricity, it is only wp-contentropriate that we harness the power of energy innovation to help drive our future,” said Erie County Executive Chris Collins.  “Energize BNMC will further propel the innovation already hwp-contentening on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, allowing entrepreneurs and small businesses owners to create more economic opportunity in Erie County.”

“We envision bringing UB’s comprehensive research expertise to this partnership through smart grid technology, micro miniature energy storage, advanced materials, photovoltaics, nanomaterials, and energy-conscious architectural design.  The result will be innovative energy solutions for our region, and indeed, the world,” said University at Buffalo President Satish K. Tripathi.

National Grid and the BNMC are currently seeking technology partners to help integrate energy innovation into the medical and life science campus and the surrounding community.
