Visitors from the Silicon Desert
Earlier this week, we welcomed 21 health care, research, education, and business leaders from Phoenix for a benchmarking visit led by the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce. They are considering creating an organization like the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. to help facilitate conversation and collaboration among their region’s leading entities. As they talked about their plans with other cities around the country, they were pointed toward Buffalo & the BNMC, and we were more than hwp-contenty to host the group to share what we’ve learned. This trip was a follow-up from last year’s benchmarking visit to the Texas Medical Center in Houston.
While on the Medical Campus, they spent time with BNMC CEO Matt Enstice, founding Board Chair, Tom Beecher, former Mayor Tony Masiello, and former Oishei Foundation President Tom Baker for frank discussions about the challenges and opportunities of building the Medical Campus in Buffalo, beginning from its inception 15+ years ago. They visited dig & the Innovation Center and learned about our efforts across the Campus for job creation and technology disruption. They took a health and wellness-focused exterior Campus tour to learn more about our active placemaking efforts.
The group was very interested in tangible examples of the major institutions on the Medical Campus collaborating, so a visit to UB’s Clinical and Translational and Research Center and Kaleida Health’s Gates Vascular Institute was a must. They heard from Jacobs Institute founder, Dr. Nick Hopkins, and CEO, Bill Maggio, about its role as a nexus between clinical care and research, facilitating connections between physicians, students, engineers, entrepreneurs and industry all under one roof, and toured a number of spaces in the building, including the Toshiba Stroke Center led by Dr. Tim Murphy from the University at Buffalo. They heard from Dr. Ed Lattman at Hauptman-Woodward Institute about its role in the BioXFel grant and connections to consortium member Arizona State University. Mayor Byron Brown, Invest Buffalo Niagara President Tom Kucharski, and Buffalo Niagara Partnership President Dottie Gallagher-Cohen also shared their perspective with the group as collaborative economic development officials working with the BNMC organization and our member institutions.
While the group spent most of their trip listening to and asking questions of our partners, they did find some time to enjoy more of the cultural attributes in Buffalo Niagara! Many were thrilled at our weather, as it was 120 degrees when they left Phoenix, and were hwp-contenty just to walk and run comfortably outside. We had a lovely dinner with their delegation and leaders from our community at the Darwin Martin House, a nice tie as the Phoenix region is home to Taliesin West, another Frank Lloyd Wright home.
We have learned so much from other communities, we are always hwp-contenty to give back and spend time with those looking to do something similar. We are hosting a delegation from Baton Rouge later this summer and look forward to sharing our experience with them, as well.

A Conversation with Marc Pope, Community Program Manager
Marc Pope recently joined the BNMC team as Community Program Manager, a newly created position. Marc will be responsible for overseeing programs that benefit local residents and community engagement initiatives. He will focus on programs designed to promote economic opportunity, including local hiring and purchasing, health and wellness and the Neighborhood Solar Partnership.
How does your varied background working in customer service and the political world intersect with your new position at the BNMC?
As Senator Tim Kennedy’s community liaison, I worked with many community stakeholder groups and had the opportunity to learn and listen so I think that experience will be very beneficial for my work with the BNMC. I have had a chance to get to know many residents in the neighborhoods around the Campus through my work with Senator Kennedy and other volunteer work. Because of that experience, I have a pretty good understanding of how the community views the Medical Campus and the issues that are important to them. I also think my experience working in the life safety industry and interacting with customers helped me understand how to work with varied audiences and most importantly, how to listen – skills that I believe will be important as I work to bring programs to our surrounding neighborhoods and to gain more understanding of the types of initiatives that are important to our closest communities.
What kinds of work will you do in this new role?
My role will be to help the BNMC team implement initiatives in the community and to help develop strategies to help move forward our community-based programs. Since I have strong relationships with our local elected officials and with community leaders and residents, I believe I can help move programs forward and help to promote them through channels that residents trust and rely on. I will specifically be working on economic opportunity initiatives that connect small businesses to the member institutions and that connect local residents to career opportunities on the Medical Campus.
As a native of Wilmington, Delaware and a relatively new transplant to Buffalo in 2014, what are your immediate impressions?
Buffalo’s rich history presents its greatest opportunities. There are lots of diverse neighborhoods and backgrounds that are celebrated like St. Patrick’s Day, Dyngus Day and Juneteenth that allow you to wp-contentreciate everyone’s heritage. I believe it’s important to continue to bring diverse communities together to build trust and continue Buffalo’s progress. From the arts to food, Buffalo’s cultural diversity is what unites communities. Having lived in cities like Wilmington and Philadelphia, I am excited to see the direction that Buffalo is heading in; making the city a sustainable place for everyone to live and work.
What attracted you to work at the BNMC?
I was interested primarily because I know the BNMC is doing a great job and I like the direction that it is headed. I want to continue to ensure that the community is aware of all of the positive things that are hwp-contentening here and the positive impact that it has on the overall community. I am looking forward to the opportunity to continue building relationships between the neighborhoods and the Campus for the benefit of both.
What else keeps you busy?
Despite leaving Senator Kennedy’s office, I still have a love for politics, particularly the strategy part of it and I expect I will find ways to get involved in upcoming campaigns. I also am an entrepreneur, providing graphic design and social media services, and an author of soon to be two books. I strive to balance my time well so that I make time for my wife and two children. When you spend a lot of time in the public, having quiet time away from the crowds can be really important.
Join Our Bike Trains and Bike to Work Breakfast with Your Neighbors on May 19th!
In an effort to encourage more people to try biking as a commuting option and to participate in Bike to Work Day on May 19, local commuters will have the opportunity to join “Bike Trains” to ride to work on the Medical Campus with a group instead of on their own.
The BNMC, in collaboration with GObike Buffalo, have designated four meeting locations for interested bicyclists to meet and ride a designated route with experienced riders in time to join the Bike to Work Day breakfast to be held on the Medical Campus on Friday, May 19th.

The bike trains are intended to encourage less experienced riders to try commuting by bike with others and to create a sense of camaraderie on Bike to Work Day.
What hwp-contentens at the breakfast?
The Bike to Work Day celebration will include a light breakfast, bike portraits, and short celebration at the pocket park located at Ellicott Street and North Oak Street on the Medical Campus beginning at 7:00 AM. GObike Buffalo will provide free minor bike repairs and adjustments for riders on site. Bike storage is available across the street at North Oak and Ellicott or at the many bike racks throughout Campus. Medical Campus employees are also eligible for free Reddy Bike share memberships and can sign up by emailing gobnmc@bnmc-old.local.

i4 Studio is a Collaboration between BNMC’s Innovation Center and The International Center for Studies in Creativity
What: A celebration of the official launch of i4 Studio, the first Idea Lab located in Western New York. i4 Studio will offer programs for businesses and individuals to wp-contently creative thinking tools and processes to generate breakthroughs in idea generation, creative problem solving, strategic planning and business modeling.
The concept was created through collaboration between the Innovation Center, powered by the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, and the International Center for Studies in Creativity (ICSC) located at SUNY Buffalo State. ICSC is the first program to offer the science of creativity at the graduate level and is globally recognized for its programs that teach skills in creative thinking, innovative leadership practices and problem solving skills. Buffalo, N.Y., September 2, 2016 – Local small businesses interested in doing business with institutions and businesses on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus are encouraged to participate in the Business Enterprise Fair to be held on September 20 at UB’s Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Center on the Medical Campus.
The Business Enterprise Fair will provide an in-person forum to connect local vendors, particularly minority, women and veteran business owners, with those who make purchasing decisions for organizations based on and around the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. Purchasers include the City of Buffalo, University at Buffalo, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Kaleida Health, and more.
The event is free to small businesses and will provide an opportunity to highlight products and services and to make personal connections with purchasers from the major Campus institutions. A previous Business Enterprise Fair held in late 2014 resulted in a number of new relationships and business opportunities for local vendors.
Vendors must commit to participating from 1 pm – 5 pm on Tuesday, September 20 and will be provided a table to display information. Free parking will be available at the Gateway Building at 77 Goodell Street and at the parking lot at 589 Ellicott Street across from the Innovation Center.
The Business Enterprise Fair is hosted by BNMC Works, a collaboration of BNMC institutions including the University at Buffalo, Kaleida Health, Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the BNMC, Inc, in partnership with the City of Buffalo and the Small Business Association. The mission of BNMC Works is to increase employment of local residents and to increase the purchase of goods and services from local suppliers by organizations located on the Medical Campus.

Six private offices added to accommodate start up growth on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus
Buffalo, N.Y., March 11, 2016 – The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus recently completed the build-out and leasing of six new, private offices in its dig cowork and event space at the Thomas R. Beecher Jr. Innovation Center to accommodate growing demand for workspace from the start-up community. The six offices have been built within the 6,000 square foot space on the first floor of the Innovation Center, Buffalo’s largest business incubator that houses start-up and emerging companies, as well as the businesses that provide services to them. The Innovation Center serves more than 100 companies and nearly 500 employees.
The six companies leasing the new offices represent a combination of those moving up from coworking at dig to more permanent office space, as well as new companies joining the Innovation Center community. Those leasing the new offices include:
- Girls Education Collaborative supports and promotes the efforts of local communities in developing countries to improve educational opportunities for girls. The non-profit had been located in the Suites at the Innovation Center and will now have expanded office space in the new dig offices.
- JMS Technical Solutions, Inc. a former dig member, is an international technology consulting and staffing firm.
- Norris Clifton Creative, also a former dig member, is a boutique-marketing group offering advertising, marketing, branding & identity, web services and photography.
- A former dig member, The Parson Group, LLC is the parent company with subsidiaries in the fields of Philanthropy and Social Engagement (The Black Diamond Society™), Educational Training and Development (The AppleTree Agency™) and Mobile Application Development (HIPPO™).
- Tipping Point Communications expanded beyond its Rochester headquarters to Buffalo and offers marketing, public relations and digital media services.
- 911Flex, LLC (formerly 911Next) brokers public safety and national security products and services and was a dig member previously. The company shares the office space with Plur-al-ity Press, which aspires to be the lead generator of sophisticated thought-images advancing how both image and language are consumed and created while assisting writers in deepening their craft.
According to Vic Nole, Director of Business Development for the BNMC Inc., “We recognized that there was a growing demand from dig members whose companies were maturing and had a need for more permanent and private office space. We see this as an indication of a very healthy entrepreneurial environment as companies realize success and have a need for greater resources to continue to grow their businesses. We are more than hwp-contenty to be able to accommodate those needs with these new offices.”
The office are designed to accommodate one to four individuals and are constructed with clear glass walls and doors, providing users privacy when necessary but an open feel in the midst of the dig environment. Lease agreements are month-to- month, providing young companies flexibility as they continue to grow. Amenities include a fully operational set up for tenants including Internet, telephone and print/copy services as well as access to the events and services offered by the Innovation Center.

The LEED-certified Innovation Center opened in 2010 with two tenants and is designed to accommodate small and mid-size companies seeking office, wet lab and/or research space, on a month-to-month basis or via longer-term leases. Owned and operated by BNMC Inc., the facility is designed as a “plug ‘n play” set-up whereby tenants enjoy a fully operational office setting without having to handle office and facilities issues such as phone, Internet and other services. Walking on Wednesdays is Back!
Walk during your lunch hour with your co-workers! Walking on Wednesdays (W.O.W.) , a great mid-day break walk, will get you back to work refreshed and ready to tackle the afternoon.
Join us at the RPCI Kaminski Park every Wednesday on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. Walks are wp-contentroximately 1.5 miles. All walks begin at 12:10 p.m. and end at 12:40 p.m. Be sure to dress for the weather as walks take place whether it rains or shines, except if there is lightning.
Stop by the RPCI Farmer’s Market beginning June1 every Wednesday from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. before or after each walk to get some fresh vegetables, fruits, jams, baked goods and more.
For your comfort and safety, please remember:
- Wear proper, comfortable footwear
- Watch for eye-level bushes and trees
- Watch for broken concrete, potholes and uneven surfaces
- Obey all traffic signs and signals
- Alert walk leaders and other walkers of unsafe conditions
- Walk leaders have cell phones and should be notified of any incidents so they can summon help if necessary
- Sun protection: sun block, (should be wp-contentlied a half hour before exposure) sunglasses, wide-brimmed hat
- Adequate hydration before, after and during the walk.

Local Executives at BNMC’s Innovation Center Complete Incubator Management Certificate Program
Buffalo, NY— Vic Nole, Director of New Business Development, and Jennifer Flood, Suites Administrator, from the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc.’s (BNMC Inc.) Thomas R. Beecher Jr. Innovation Center recently completed the National Business Incubation Association’s (NBIA) Incubator Management Certificate Program.
The educational program provides a comprehensive and practical overview of the tasks and responsibilities of managing business incubators, which are programs that accelerate the successful development of start-up and emerging companies by providing entrepreneurs with resources and services. Launched in 2007, the certificate program is designed to enhance managers’ skills and to provide them with opportunities to gain ideas for building stronger relationships with key constituents, providing effective client services, ensuring incubator sustainability and more.
“I am proud to have earned the Incubator Management Certificate,” said Nole. “It certainly helps me to provide the best possible service to our client companies and to our local entrepreneurs who need assistance in launching their business ideas. It also has allowed me to join a solid network of incubator managers across the country who share best practices and resources for the benefit of our local clients.”
NBIA officials say receiving a certificate is a mark of distinction verifying mastery of incubator governance, services and policies. “We thought it would be helpful for NBIA to establish a base of knowledge that every incubator manager should know, regardless of the type of incubator they run,” said Tom Strodtbeck, NBIA director of events and international programs. “The certificate program is a way for people to track their progress in gaining that knowledge.”
To receive a certificate, incubator managers must complete a total of 24 hours of training that covers a range of topics, including incubator finances, strategic planning, graduation policies and procedures, client selection, and facilities management.
Business incubation programs, such as the Thomas R. Beecher, Jr. Innovation Center, catalyze the process of starting and growing companies by providing entrepreneurs with the expertise, networks and tools they need to make their ventures successful. NBIA estimates that in 2011 alone, North American incubators assisted about 49,000 start-up companies that provided full-time employment for nearly 200,000 workers and generated annual revenue of almost $15 billion.
The Thomas R. Beecher, Jr. Innovation Center, located at 640 Ellicott Street on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, is a LEED-certified research and development space housing early stage companies, as well as companies offering support services like access to capital, IP attorneys, talent acquisition, sales, and marketing. The growing space is designed to accommodate small to medium companies seeking office space, wet lab and/or research space.
The Suites at the Innovation Center offers physical and virtual office space on a month-to-month basis. Offices are furnished with telephone and internet access included. The “plug ‘n play” space is perfect for entrepreneurs and small businesses. The Innovation Center also houses dig, a collaborative co-work space created to help people turn their idea into a business. Both the Innovation Center and dig are operated by the BNMC Inc.

More than 26 companies will be hosting events during the open house, featuring food, drinks, and entertainment, including live music, a golf simulator, and much more! A five minute “Power Pitch” session begins at 6:30 p.m. featuring several local entrepreneurs hosted by the Inventures Group.

d!g Buffalo to Open on March 24th
The wait is over! d!g buffalo is opening its doors (officially) on Monday, March 24th! The new co-working space, located in the Thomas R. Beecher, Jr. Innovation Center at 640 Ellicott Street, is designed for those in the early stages of developing a business or an idea. d!g, which stands for design innovation garage, will represent a range of creative, mechanical, and operational industries, driving the creation of new possibilities, new collaborations, and new partnerships. Part of our mission at the BNMC, Inc. is to support entrepreneurs and help grow businesses to create jobs. For us, d!g is more than a space, it’s a community of changemakers.
Our new digs were designed by faculty of the Department of Architecture and undergraduate and graduate students from the Situated Technologies Research Group: Prof. Omar Khan, Prof. Laura Garofalo, Michael Kirschner, John Geisler, Kathryn Hobert, Philip Gusmano, Joseph Swerdlin and Nicole Halstead. Omar Khan, Associate Professor and Chair of the department of architecture at the University at Buffalo, was one of the original visionaries for d!g. For Omar, it was somewhat personal as he had seen too many of his talented students lured away to other cities by a creative vibe and culture –he wanted a way to keep those students in Buffalo.
So why d!g? d!g will have mentors on hand during the day to help our innovators working on various projects. Plus, d!g will also have a Curator on staff to help facilitate networking among innovators and develop programming for the space. We’ll have networking and programming events to encourage conversations among our innovators and experts. d!g is an affordable option for entrepreneurs currently working at home, start-up companies looking to be a part of a larger community, families of patients looking for a place to work while visiting loved ones at the hospitals on the Medical Campus, a site for satellite offices – anyone looking for an environment to help foster productivity and success. We’d also like to add that d!g, which is located on a former loading dock in the renovated Trico Products Corp., building, complete with a glass garage door overlooking the Medical Campus, is a really, really cool space. Really.

Four Neighborhoods, One Community Receives Planning Award from American Planning Association
Four Neighborhoods, One Community was selected to receive the Outstanding Planning Award for Comprehensive Planning from the Western New York Section of the American Planning Association. Recognizing the planning efforts designed to create a collaborative partnership between City of Buffalo and the Fruit Belt, Downtown, and Allentown neighborhoods, the initiative integrates the shared vision of community leaders, residents, and business owners within the surrounding neighborhoods with the planning that takes place throughout the campus. These collaborative efforts are paving the way for the use of this initiative as a best-practice model as it continues to gain recognition.
“the Medical Campus is blessed to be surrounded by neighborhoods that are collaborative and active in shaping their future,” said Michael Ball, the Director of Planning and Implementation for the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. “Four Neighborhoods, One Community will position Buffalo as a national model for how the Medical Campus as an urban campus and economic development engine can effectively develop and grow in conjunction with surrounding neighborhoods for the benefit of the greater community.”
Over 100 residents, business owners, employees, and community members gathered to discuss the changes they would like to see in their neighborhoods. As a strategic plan, Four Neighborhoods, One Community focuses on engagement that is designed to further integrate Medical Campus-wide planning efforts as well as those of the individual BNMC institutions with those occurring in the surrounding community.
It is the desire of all stakeholders involved that this initiative continues to produce tangible results as the dialogue moves forward identifying, addressing, resolving the issues that stifle economic development, neighborhood sustainability, and the improved health for all individuals that have connection to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and are in one of the near-by neighborhoods.
The outcome-goals manifesting from the planning include workforce development, streetscape improvements, increased transportation options, environmental sustainability changes, and policy improvements to help create healthy communities. The purpose of this initiative is not to keep growth within the Medical Campus, but to combine and improve resources in order that community goals might align with institutional goals to enhance the overall attractiveness of the City of Buffalo.
