Roswell Park Cancer Institute Named

LIVESTRONG® Community Impact Project Finalist and Award Recipient

Organization will receive grant to help people affected by cancer

BUFFALO, NY – April 9, 2012 – Today Roswell Park Cancer Institute was announced as a LIVESTRONG® Community Impact Project finalist and award recipient. The project, created by the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the non-profit founded by the cancer survivor and champion cyclist to serve people affected by cancer and empower them to take action, will bring proven cancer support programs to 90 communities across the United States.

“We are proud to be named as a LIVESTRONG Community Impact Project award recipient,” said Judy Smith, MD, Medical Director at Roswell Park. “Once again, our dedicated community of supporters demonstrated their commitment to Roswell Park and our efforts on behalf of cancer patients. This award will enable our team to enhance the services they provide and will raise important awareness of the critical role Palliative Care plays in the lives of cancer patients and their families.”

“By investing in these bold and innovative cancer support programs, the Lance Armstrong Foundation is providing inspiration and empowerment to area residents so they can band together as a community to face cancer head-on,” said Doug Ulman, Foundation president and CEO.  “We are grateful to each and every person who voted for making their voices heard and improving access to care for those affected by cancer.”

More than 200 qualified hospitals, cancer centers, university students and community organizations in eight regions across the United States were selected to participate in an online voting campaign. Over a two-week period, more than 450,000 votes were cast and Roswell Park was among the finalists. Roswell Park’s Palliative Care team will use the $10,000 award to take part in a national training program that will support their efforts to obtain the Joint Commission’s Advanced Certification Program for Palliative Care.

Advanced Certification for Palliative Care is designed to set standards and acknowledge hospitals providing state-of-the-art palliative care services that relieve symptoms and stress of serious illness and improve quality of life for patients.  The Center to Advance Palliative Care will provide tools and training to 20 hospitals and cancer centers across the country to assist in their efforts to qualify for the Certification.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation is committed to supporting community organizations in their efforts to help cancer survivors face the challenges and changes that come with cancer. Since its inception in 1997, the organization has invested more than $70 million in community-centered organizations.

Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations FAQs

The energizeBNMC partnership between National Grid and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) is designed to transform the Medical Campus into a global leader in energy innovation. As a part of energizeBNMC, BNMC has partnered with AAA of Western and Central New York, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), Clean Communities of Western New York, the Global Energy Institute, and the US Department of Energy (DOE) to initiate the effort to become a leader in New York State electric transportation.
There are currently 21 EV stations installed throughout the BNMC. The goal of this project is to lower vehicle emissions into the environment and the overall operating costs that come with petroleum-based vehicles, offering alternative transportation fuels like electricity and natural gas.

Below are some facts that will answer common questions in regards to the EV charging stations:

What prompted the installation of the cutting-edge EV charging stations?

A major focus for the BNMC institutions right now is planning for our short-term and long-term growth, in particular our transportation and energy needs across the campus. As it is rapidly growing, the BNMC is dedicated to creating a sustainable campus for the future.  The EV charging station installations are a part of the vision to create a sustainable Medical Campus that is environment-friendly.

Where did the funding for this project come from?

With a grant of $150,000 awarded by Clean Communities/DOE/NYSERDA, the BNMC and AAA of Western and Central NY were able to complete this $300,000 project to implement the installation of the EV charging stations.

Where can the Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (240-volt GE DuraStations) be found throughout the BNMC?

The EV charging stations can be found at the following locations (See Virtual Tour for visual locations):

589 Ellicott Street Parking Lot.

880 Ellicott Street Parking Garage at Ellicott and Goodrich Streets.

134 High Street Parking Garage – This employee-only garage will open at the end of March.

-Ellicott Street right of way, near 589 Ellicott Street Parking Lot – these will be operational when the street goes two-way as part of the ongoing streetscape project.

Do I have to pay to charge my vehicle in one of the garages or parking lots?

If you work on the BNMC and have a parking pass for one of the BNMC-managed lots, you can charge at no cost. If you are a visitor to the Medical Campus, talk to the attendant at either the 589 Ellicott Street lot or the Ellicott Goodrich Garage if this is not your primary parking destination. Currently, the use of the EV charging stations is being provided at no cost to patients, visitors, and members of the community. Parking fees are charged at the daily rate.

Is charging availability on a first-come, first-serve basis?

Yes, this is currently hwp-contentening on a first-come, first-serve basis. As demand grows, we will adapt this strategy.

How long will I be able to leave my vehicle charging in a parking lot or garage on the BNMC?

As long as you are parked there. Parking hours and rates vary across the BNMC.

Are there other EV charging stations in WNY?

AAA of Western and Central New York has installed EV charging stations at 2 of its AAA Car Care Plus locations, one at 8120 Main Street in Clarence (716.932.3900), and the other at 2131 Eggert Road in Amherst (716.362.0562). For more information on how to access their EV charging stations, contact each location.

Will I be able to leave my vehicle charging at one of the EV charging stations located along the right of way on Ellicott Street near the Innovation Center without getting a parking ticket?

No. As stated above, these chargers were installed knowing that Ellicott Street will go two-way at the completion of the federal streetscape project. Until then, these chargers are not to be used. Please pull into the parking lot at 589 Ellicott Street and access those chargers.

Spirit of Life Tree First in a Series of City-Wide Installations

WHAT: The dedication of the contemporary sculptural art installation, Spirit of Life Tree, on the southeast corner of High and Ellicott Street on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. In an effort to contribute to the City of Buffalo’s growth as a cultural tourist destination, and inform our citizens and visitors of the rich traditions and potential of Buffalo, the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation Downtown Sculptural Art Initiative intends to place five thematic sculptural art installations throughout the downtown over the next five years. These sculptures will celebrate the “Spirit of Buffalo” in both traditional and contemporary art forms.

The Spirit of Life Tree is eight feet high. It is made of Corten metal, which ages and gets stronger with time.

“Our intention is to collaborate with organizations around the city to tell the story of Buffalo,” said Jake Schneider, President of the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation. “This is the first installation of permanent public art in the city since the 1980s. We are thrilled install the first piece on such a high visibility location on the growing Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.”

“The sculpture is titled Spirit of Life. A spirit of hope lives in the people who travel here to this medical campus seeking a better quality of life and ways that this community can strengthen them,” said artist Valeria Cray-Dihaan. “This tree represents their spirit, and life, and the strength of the people to be healed whether it is emotionally or physically or both. Made of steel, the tree is unmoved by doubt or disbelief. It will endure all the seasons.”

Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus Updates Community on Progress

Collaboration of Region’s Leading Institutions Celebrates Past, Present, and Future Growth and Development

BUFFALO, NY – Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus officials today highlighted the growth and development of the 120-acre Medical Campus over the past 10 years, outlined the findings of its recent Master Plan Update and the Four Neighborhoods, One Community initiative, and identified priorities for the future. This update was presented to an audience of business leaders, health care professionals, researchers, entrepreneurs, government and community leaders, as well as the media, during a public meeting on the BNMC at Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s Hohn Auditorium.

“Today we are highlighting the impact that the continued collaboration of the region’s leading life sciences research, clinical care, and medical education institutions has on our community,” said William L. Joyce, Chair, Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus Board of Directors. “The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus as a whole has become the economic driver the leadership envisioned ten years ago.”

“The BNMC has far exceeded expectations, fulfilling the 20 year Master Plan developed in 2002 in just eight years,” said David Gamble, Principal of Gamble Associates of Boston, Mass., the BNMC’s master planning consultant. “The growth is truly remarkable, and they have done so in a way that few other medical centers have, as a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization.”

Joining Joyce and Gamble to address the crowd were Congressman Brian Higgins; Mayor Byron Brown, City of Buffalo; James Wadsworth, Chair, The John R. Oishei Foundation Board of Directors;  and Matthew Enstice, President & Chief Executive Officer, Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc.

Mayor Brown highlighted Four Neighborhoods, One Community, a planning initiative funded by the John R. Oishei Foundation, in which City staff worked alongside BNMC staff to reach out and engage stakeholders in the four neighborhoods of Allentown, Fruit Belt, Downtown, and BNMC.  This collaborative neighborhood planning initiative was conducted by Sasaki Associates and Madden Planning Group.

“Four Neighborhoods, One Community began with the recognition that the city and the Medical Campus are committed to working together to harness their respective strengths.  This is a project focused on prioritization of existing plans, new ideas, and most of all implementation,” said Mayor Brown. “Together, ‘one community’ seeks to evolve into a center of employment, research, health care services, education, a variety of housing opportunities, and the retail and entertainment amenities that come from a vital urban setting.”

Congressman Higgins announced the naming dedication of the BNMC’s Innovation Center, the recently renovated four-story former Trico Products Corp. building on Ellicott Street, to longtime BNMC leader and volunteer Thomas R. Beecher, Jr.

“The Thomas R. Beecher, Jr., Innovation Center is a symbol of entrepreneurship and collaboration on the BNMC,” said Rep. Higgins. “The dedication of this building is the perfect way to honor the man who has dedicated so much time and energy to the success of the thriving Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.”

BNMC Chief Executive Officer Matthew K. Enstice “flew” the audience through a virtual model of the Medical Campus developed by the University at Buffalo’s Center for Computational Research. This model shows the dramatic development that has taken place on the 120-acre campus over the past 10 years, highlighting the success of the BNMC member institutions.

The virtual model of the Medical Campus and copies of Four Neighborhoods, One Community, including the BNMC Master Plan Update, the Allentown Neighborhood Strategy, and the Fruit Belt Neighborhood Strategy are available at bnmc-old.local.
